Internet Radio
« on: February 19, 2009, 03:17:03 PM »

I'm on a search for a good internet radio.

Ever since my dad subscribed for SBC DSL I have been using LaunchCast internet radio on Yahoo.com. I was able to listen to my own 'customized' station free of ads because I had a 'plus' account due to the DSL subscription. Also, I could skip as many songs as I wanted until I got to one I wanted to hear.

However, they have recently been taken over by CBS Radio and are discontinuing the 'customized' station which really has me heated. They have their regular stations but are now putting a limit on the number of songs you can skip per hour.

I have also been using Pandora which I liked because you can search a radio station by genre or just by artist and hear related music. However, they also have a skip limit on each individual station.

Can anyone suggest a good internet radio site? I hate the skip limits, but I can live with it if I have to (I get why they have to have it). I really just want something that has a good idea of what goes together and will recommend new artists. This is my primary way of finding new music.

I listen to...well, not so much LISTEN to anymore, but hang out at... ErrorFM.  The_FOO has been there since the beginning, too.  There are two channels now; one is mostly alt, while the other is "indie pop."

Small local station in SoCal. Very small, very local, freeform classic rock, pop and blues, DJs on Saturday afternoons include the station founder (plays lots of esoteric blues) and the legendary Jimmy Rabbit (plays just about anything good). No DJs the rest of the time, almost no commercials because they have about 3 local sponsors. This is real radio. I hope it survives.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everybody.

I hope your small station survives too, ivan. We had a small, independent station here in Wichita a few years back. In my lifetime it has been only station not owned by ClearChannel. They played a lot of everything but mostly alternative, "punk"-pop, and rock. They only lasted a few months and were replaced by some Spanish jams.

If you ever plan on driving through Wichita, don't even bother turning on the radio.

I used to use Pandora, but the fact that you couldn't skip all the songs you wanted drove me away.
I've since switched to last.fm, which I'm really loving.
You can listen to recommendations based on your tastes, and build a library of your own.
You can also "love" or "ban" a song, so that the program better learns what you prefer!
It's totally free, allows you to scrobble to most websites/IM systems, and I'd recommend it to anyone

I just discovered last.fm myself, and so far I think it's pretty cool.

This reminds me-
So-crates, in regards to your media center thread, XBMC has a built in interface for Last.FM.

Hey.   :x  I like K.D. Lang.

And so what if I'm a lesbo?

Although, to be fair, there is exactly one person on this board from whom I'd accept any kind of criticism over my own musical tastes, and you're it.

What's wrong with Ms. Lang?  Her voice is amazing.

I just heard over at /. that LastFM are going to be charging people who live outside the US, UK or Germany.

It's supposedly related to the fact that the above receive advertising, but other countries don't. The charge is going to the 3 Euros per month, which seems a fair price, if you are willing to pay for an internet service such as this. I personally have never tried it and am only realising through this thread how big Internet radio is.

I think I am going to give it a try.

That's racist! I speak on behalf of my people when I say "Us Canadian-folks be outraged eh."

Haha, that was my first thought. I was reminded of an experiment we did in primary school where all left handed children got to go for lunch first and where given the choice of books to read and toys to play with at break. It was a fun day! I think I missed the point of the exercise....being left handed and all :D

...on a serious note, that experiment really opened my eyes as a child which is obvious since i still remember it some thirteen years later.

Well I live in the US, so I guess I don't have to worry about it...but, as much as I love LastFM, I don't think I love it enough that I'd pay for it o_O

http://grooveshark.com/

Just found this one. No skip limits for one, but the best part is you can listen to whatever you want! All the music is user-uploaded. You can search for one particular song, artist, album, etc . . Create your own playlist of whatever you want to hear.

It also has a radio feature if you're into how Last.fm or Pandora does things.

Here's a hearty second for Grooveshark.  It's one of the default webapps on Peppermint OS, which is how I was first exposed to it, but I found that I like it almost as much as Last.fm.
