The Flaming Mobos: my best pc just flamed out.
« on: February 18, 2010, 08:37:29 PM »

My best comp; my studio recording pc - WITH ALL MY MUSIC ON IT - suddenly burst into flames night before last. Yep; Flames. There are WERE two tiny chips; probably op amps, on the board just beside the header for CD Audio. For some reason they burnt up; reaching temps high enough to set the actual board and the plastic plug and cable (CD Audio) on fire. Good thing I happened to be sitting here, as it most likely would have burned my house down. The case was open on the side, and was under a wooden mixer table. It kept trying to reboot while it was burning as well, instead of just shutting down. I had to unplug it to stop it. Now my entire basement is permeated with that god-awful acrid, STANK electrical burnination funk.
Anybody know anything that removes that from everything?

Anyway, so I hadda buy a new machine.

Intel Core i5-750(2.66GHz)
64 bit Quad-Core

8GB DDR3 1333

1TB SATA HDD

16X DVD±R/RW SuperMulti Drive

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

"The Flaming Mobos" sounds like a good name for a band.

Where'd you get this new machine?  Did you build it yourself, or order it from Dell or someone?

The mobo burned up; not the drives.

oh. i just assumed, you know, that a flaming motherboard might have a chance of damaging the drives. just a thought.

also, a Terabyte of flash memory? I wasn't aware that they came that big.

Anybody know anything that removes that from everything?

Those Russian ciggies will do the trick. They don't exactly remove the flaming mobo stank; they just make you miss it.

Invest in a hookah, my friend. Many a fraternity stank have been eliminated by mine.

Did anyone else read that as "Flaming Moobs", or was it just me.

Sorry to hear that 12.

LOL! Thats an even better band name. "Flaming Moobtassles"

  Update -
*sigh*  ...Well, I recieved my new pc. Again; kudos to www.Newegg.com for the lightning-fast delivery.
However. . .   I didn't really LOOK FOR certain things when I bought this; I thought these things were pretty much Standard and available on nearly every pc. Things like IDE connections and PCI slots. This machine has NONE of each. So much for plugging in my M-audio Delta 1010's to record.
  feh.

2010 sucks crusty ass so far.  :x

Oh; and I just discovered the engine in my last ride is broke. Oil pans full of coolant are an ominous sign.

And I cant (yet) ride the bike cos my foot, ankle and shin is still numb and paralyzed.

well, considering that the chipset was right there on the page, you probably should have done some research. just sayin'

however, considering the endless stupidity and cheapness of PC manufacturers these days, it really cant be helped. i have a friend who has a computer with the disk drive sideways, which isnt so bad by itself if the genius manufacturers hadn't decided to put the ram slots behind it. I seriously am starting to think that HP is one of the worse manufacturers out there.

I think i got lucky with my laptop; it only has a few noticeable quirks as far as i know, and none of the hardware requires proprietary drivers.

Swapped out the video card on this new machine; replacing the non-game-playing ATI Radeon 5750 with a BFG Tech nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card.

 Oh my.

Currently awaiting the arrival of:

ASUS M4A79T Deluxe AM3 DDR3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard
to replace the one that fried

also:
  AMD Phenom II X2 555 Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 80W Dual-Core
and one 4g stick of ram. ( Supports 16g )

This mobo has PCI slots, and will simply replace/upgrade the burnt one.

Update:

Got both machines running. And by running I mean HAULING ASS. Holy G-zeus, this is awesome. I'm glad that other board fried now. The Gateway has been turned to the dark side; and outfitted with all my gaming stuff and games. You saw the specs on it and the video card I put in it...   now it is HD component- connected to the new 48" LG LCD flatscreen. YEEEOOWWW!

The other machine; the Studio comp, was basically completely rebuilt save the case. I even had to swap the power supply out. 400 watts was "Oh MAN! More than you'll ever need!!" when I got it for the original build. I just pulled it out and jammed a 1200 Watt modular supply in there. Heh. More than I'll ever need. . .
Got another hard drive, too; Western Digital 1T SATA.  So this machine has suddenly grown tremendously in nearly every aspect except the case.

   I am happy with it.

BTW,  all four hard drives that were connected to the Flaming Mobo are fine. As is the CPU, the RAM, the power supply, the video card, etc. I have a couple of mobos in the parts room; Im going to see if I can stick all these leftovers together for another machine.
