I honestly do not think that most people care about what goes on in the governement so long as they can complain about it.

People just have a poor ability to connect the hot button issues they care about with anything relevant to their daily lives.
Someone will vote against a democrat and for a republican based on their feelings about abortion, yet the legality of abortion means next to nothing to the average American's quality of life.  If you think abortion is a bad example you can pick gay marriage or something else.
Say what you want about Ayn Rand, but rational self interest doesn't work in America (or anywhere probably) because the people aren't rational and they don't seem to know what their interest is.

For the herd rational self interest doesn't exist, but for the 'campaign contributors' (bribers, benefactors, etc.) it is definitely alive and kicking.  $100K in 'campaign contributions'=10s to 100s of millions in graft.

I think that the american government are the only plausible one they got to offer. No other parties are there to fight. So, there are no competitors. In fact, Obama is struggling against himself or his own party members since he has been shooting himself in the legs with his reforms and all.

People hate both parties (really just one party), but they are too short sighted to vote for any other party. It doesn't matter anyway. If we got rid of the Dems and Reps, two more asshole parties would just take their place. People are just too stupid, ignorant, and intellectually lazy to worry about themselves and the rest of the country.
