Nation Building Here in the US
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:23:34 PM »

OK, our POTUS gave a speech where he said he was going to accelerate the removal of troops from Afghanistan so we could concentrate on "Nation Building" here at home.

So my understanding of "Nation Building" is that it's a euphemism for using military force to prop up puppet governments to insure US economic interests abroad.  This comes along with all the war profiteering and other fun stuff.

So is our POTUS saying that he's brining the military back here so that they can bomb, shoot, etc. the US populace?  Are we going to be using drones to target anyone here who disagrees with the government?  Will we too meet the suede denim secret police?

Maybe that was a poor choice of words, but of course all he meant was that it makes no sense to spend enormous gobs of taxpayer money in a futile attempt to establish a democracy in what is now a feudal nation while at the same time cutting services and neglecting infrastructure here.

When it was Bush's war, "nation building" was a euphemism for imperialism. Now that it's Obama's war, it's also a euphemism for socialist takeover.

It's almost comical how Obama's getting it from both sides: the left is screaming that 30K troops is pathetically inadequate, and the right is screaming that a 30K withdrawal puts the remaining troops in harm's way.

I don't know -- they may both be right. But how does an imperialistic socialist president wrap up his nation-building in a graceful way?

xolik: WHERE IS OBAMA'S GIFT CERTIFICATE?
Demosthenes: Is that from the gifters movement?

Detta: Crappy old shorts and a tank top.  This is how I dress for work. Because my job is to get puked on.
Demosthenes: So is mine.  I work in IT.

It is far too late for gracefulness.

If we are not going to completely take over and own (just short of annex into statehood) a nation; then we
shouldn't a.) start a war, b.) invade, then sit down on our asses, c.) spend billions to rebuild the infrastructure,
d.) pull out troops piecemeal.

The only way for success in such endeavors is

Go in, do the job and GTFO (ie; Pakistan -Bin Laden, Grenada - students, Panama - Noriega)  or

Go in, defeat the opposing nations army, acquire the nation as a US territory, rebuild it like WE want it, then; if we feel like it, grant it independence and GTFO. (ie; Germany, Japan)

As far as Iraq and Afghanistan, IMHO the only thing to do is pack up and leave; everyone and everything immediately.
All we are accomplishing currently is getting good Americans killed and or disfigured for absolutely no real reason; with the
effect of turning nearly everyone against us more than they already were.

It is a hugely poor choice of words.  I know what he was trying to do.  As for these wars.  I was against both from the beginning.  I'm also against actions in Libya.  Curiously John Garamendi (demo congress critter from the East Bay was on Forum yesterday and he made quite a lot of sense.  I'm just surprised that people (commentators, newscasters, etc.) didn't react to the phrase Nation Building.  Or is it just a visceral pejorative to me?

No one noticed the phrase because no one watched the speech.
