I understand. It's just very that it's very overwhelming in Quebec and the french don't like me there. There's some pet peeves I have, like George Bush. Some people I just don't like...

Maybe they feel the same way when they come to Ottawa? Perhaps you should try and look at it from their point of view.

No comment about The Shrub though.

Heh. You're going to encounter a lot of people you "just don't like" in your lifetime. They're not going to change to make you happy. Deal with it.

I'm upset that they didn't do the signs right in the first place.

Actually they did. A while back the PQ (I think?) got pissy and mandated all the signs be in French only. A number of stores were fined quite heavily for having English signage.

You do realize that redesigning all street, shop, and major road signs to accomodate both languages would be ridiculously prohibitively expensive, right?

"Hey small business owner, don't you know that this is a BILINGUAL country? Your family might have lived for generations steeped in French culture, but now you have to accomodate my lazy ass! Get with the expensive redesigning!"

"Quoi?"

If you tarveled to Bangladesh and no one spoke english, is that a valid reason to hate them?

Yes, because everyone hates the Dutch. ;-)

I might be mistaken, but I believe that was only having the signs being promintently French. You know, like English signs are everywhere.

Yes, I remember. There's a reason why I don't like Quebec. But signs like directions and things that are in french only, so you have to trust you have a good map and pray you don't take a wrong turn.

We do have a reasonable amount of french. If you drive on the highways, the signs are translated. In order to get MANY jobs around here (every job for the government, tourism, etc) requires you to be bilingual. In Quebec, many times you will have to find someone who speaks english.

Bilingual requirements here are a joke. Apparently I have a "B-level" French vocabulary, but I couldn't carry out a conversation to save my life.

I'm a passenger, but I can still be inside a car and going to Quebec. Every time I go, we get lost.

You're probably right. I remember it as being no English but that's probably my apathy for all things Quebec.

You can get tested both through temporary employment agencies and (I'm assuming) goverment services.

I do think that the highway signs should be in both languages. Especially around Montreal. Holy confusing batman.

I think all highway signs should be replaced by feral children chained to the ground who wildly gesticulate and scream "GRAAANAAAARRRR THAATTT WAYYYYY".

Montreal for sure. There's plenty of english speaking people that live there, or that come to Montreal. Besides, with the way they drive down there, you bette rknow what the hell you're doing behind the wheel.

But a place like Gatineau for example, there's no need to redo all the signs.

Harper: ARGH I AM A NAZI ROBOT. Harper may be a good guy for all I know, but he scares me. There's something about his appearance and mannerisms coupled with his party's "family values" initiatives that just rubs me the wrong way. I really can't imagine a Conservative government being good for the country - in fact, I think the election of a Conservative majority would undo a lot of the social progress we've seen in the last little while.

As for the parties part, I've never been down with the Conservative party due to their hardline (and in my view, distinctly, un-Canadian) stance on many social issues and programs. No good for me.

How do you feel now?

Well the good thing is it's minority. Unfortunately for you, the NDP fan, this group doesn't hold the balance of power anymore. The bloc does. And that's not necessarly a good thing.

Harper is creepy as hell. Every time I see him on TV I think of that one frame of Dark Knight Strikes Again where the Question exposes the President for being a hologram. I mean, he's the bloody Conservative archetype...he's just too perfectly set up to appeal to that crowd. He's quiet, has a weird ass half-smile, and is a stereotypical family man. Not to mention the fact that his dead eyes creep the hell out of me.
