Ok the new book thread is here.
List your goal and progress in this thread. My goal for this year is 15. That's what I wound up with in 2010 and I'm sure 2011 will be just as hectic...if not more so. So make your goal and list your books here as you finish them.
By the way, every new post I make, I go to the last one and click "modify". Then I copy it all and paste it into my new post and make the updates. That way I don't have to redo the codes every time.

Now: Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton

15 is my goal this year
1. 1/3/11 started Looking For Calvin And Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and His Revolutionary Comic Strip by Nevin Martell (http://www.amazon.com/Looking-Calvin-Hobbes-Unconventional-Revolutionary/dp/1441106855/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1294081176&sr=1-1)
-
I'm going to say 25 novels. I will probably end up with more like 35... But just in case I get stuck on some slow starting fantasy epic I will stick to the safe 25.
I am currently on Jonathan Stroud's The Ring of Solomon. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/s/jonathan-stroud/ring-of-solomon.htm
I'm basically filling in my time before George R R Martins next book with any fantasy I can find, and still have a lot of Terry Goodkind to get through, but I'm sure I'll of completed the whole series by June.

1. Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton
Now: Glass by Ellen Hopkins
I liked Pirate Latitudes. But it was kind of one bad thing happening after another so you never really knew if the book was really over till it ended. But it was something different and I liked it.
-
On to book two,
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris.

On to book two,
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris.
Good book. I've been meaning to re-read Thomas Harris' earlier works. That one was a real page turner, as I recall.
-
I won't set a goal, but currently I'm on Treasure Island by RLS.
Now on Gullever's Travels.
-
1. Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton
2. Glass by Ellen Hopkins
Now: Empire by Orson Scott Card
OMG, Glass by Ellen Hopkins was sooooo depressing. And I read the info on the next in the series and it all gets worse. It's about a honors high school student who gets addicted to meth. Well...the first book Crank started there and this was a continuation of the horror. Really good though, I recommend.
BTW Demo, I did put your recommendations on my wishlist at paperbookswap.com (http://paperbookswap.com). But I just happened to have Empire here at home so I'll start there.
-
What's wrong with a High School student getting addicted to math?

Splendid.
Keep going!
-
1. The Ring of Solomon.
2. Red Dragon
3. Thirteen and a half lives of captain blue bear.
It does count if we've read them before right? Because I've read blue bear like 5 times before. It's just such a freaking awesome novel.
-
I am just now working on the Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx. That's a *****ng awsome book

I am just now working on the Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx. That's a *****ng awsome book
Yeah, I read that the year before last. He's pretty cool. I like the gritty autobiographies. But personally I find it to be quite pretentious based on how much he had. I've always liked more the stories of the rock stars like Sid Vicious. Who grew up in Heroin addict families and stuff like that. Hard case mental freaks. =p Nikki was just a rock star.
-
In some way I agree with you. The heroin diaries is a good book, but what I think is the best rockstar-biography has to be SLASH. I've read that book 14 times, and it still amazes me how he's survived it.
Try that book if you haven't already read it...
-
1. The Ring of Solomon.
2. Red Dragon
3. Thirteen and a half lives of captain blue bear.
4. Demon-Haunted World - Carl Sagan.

I gave up on Anathem. I was on disk 3 and nothing happened. I couldn't stomach another 25 disks of it. So I moved on.
Now: Cell by Stephen King
PS. In Cell, something happened immediately. I'm on disk 3 and things are still happening. I like it much better.
-
I really enjoyed "Cell". From beginning to end. Couldn't put it down. I blew through that one in a very short time.
-
Is that the one that became a movie with Jennifer Lopez in it?

I loved Cell by Stephen King. Demo's right, it kept my attention the whole way through. And right before it ended, I was wondering what ending would I actually enjoy more. Well, it would seem I got exactly what I wanted. Feels a bit like a cop out by Stephen King, but I still liked it. Oh also...it had a bit of a The Stand feel to it...which I loved.
Now: The Testament by John Grisham

9. Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
Now: Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
I liked Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. But one thing bothered me sometimes. It was written in the first person and he took alot of time to tell you why he didn't do certain things at the time. He'd be in the middle of an intense situation and all of a sudden be speaking very calmly (and for a long time) about why he didn't take certain courses of action. It was as if Koontz wrote the book and then when reading it over he said to himself "people are going to say, why didn't you just call the police?..so I better explain why here". It was a little distracting. Other than that, I liked it very much. The characters were likable as was the story.

Thanks. I've been a reader my whole life. I do chew through books. Usually, the first time I read a book I tear through it. When I'm done, I immediately start over and read it a second time to get anything I may have missed.

Now: Identical by Ellen Hopkins
The Darkest Evening of the Year was hard to read for me. First of all, you don't know what's going on for the entire book. It's annoying. Second, dogs are a major theme in the book. I don't like dogs so I don't like reading about how magical it is to own them. Third, the plot was based on a psychopath woman who was planning on setting fire to her 10 year old daughter with Downs Syndrome. Yeah, can't enjoy that.

Did you like The Eyes of the Dragon? I've never heard of it, but it's got great reviews on Amazon. I've put it on my paperback.com wishlist.
-
I've always loved that one.
-
I originally read it many many years ago, and it's always stuck with me as being a really good book. I starting thinking about it again recently, and went digging through my library to re-read it. No dice. It's gone mising over the years. So I went to Barnes & Noble and bought another copy. It's definitely as good as I remember. Not at all what I would consider 'typical' Stephen King (although Flagg is a major character in the book).
-
Randall Flagg is in it?? How have I not heard of it? Weird.
-
That is weird.
-
His first name is never referred to, but I can only assume that there's ONE Flagg in Stephen King's universe. :-D
-

"There are other worlds than these."
-
I don't know if anyone knows this about me, but I've not read a single SK book, and I've seen only Carrie and Stand By Me.
But enough about me.
-
Are you crazy?
-
Are you crazy?
I always assumed that was his first name.
-
No, that's my last name.
First name is Batshit.

So crazy could be your middle name...

That's a relief. I was afraid to google it. I thought for sure it was something only the Urban Dictionary would define.
