Newsgroups are to The Internet what the back alley behind the clubs downtown are to the rest of the city I live in. You can find lots of stuff there that you simply won't see anywhere else, most of it is dirty, of questionable origin, and you have to watch yourself every minute to keep from getting jumped, mugged, arrested, or pissed on. How's that for an analogy?

I'm about the same in real life as I am online. Well, maybe a trifle less overbearing, but just as opinionated and big-mouthed. Believe it or not, I've mellowed quite a bit with age....

Right now:
"Midnight Rider" by the Allman Brothers
Well, I've got to run to keep from hiding And I'm bound to keep on riding And I've got one more silver dollar But I'm not gonna let them catch me, no Not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider
And I don't own the clothes I'm wearing And the road goes on forever And I've got one more silver dollar But I'm not gonna let them catch me, no Not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider
And I've gone by the point of caring Some old bed I'll soon be sharing And I've got one more silver dollar
(Repeat three times and Fade) But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no Not gonna let them catch the Midnight Rider

Here's one I just got today: From: "Vincent Makori" <vinmakori@yahoo.com> Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2017 19:27:25 To: Demosthenes Subject: Urgent Attention
STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL & URGENT
I am Dr. Vincent Makori, a native of Cape Town and Director of Project Implementation, South Africa Ministry of Mining & Natural Resources. I am making this contact with you based on the committee's need for an individual/company who is willing to assist us with a solution to a money transfer. First and foremost, I apologized using this medium to reach you for a transaction/business of this magnitude, but this is due to Confidentiality and prompt access reposed on this medium. In unfolding this proposal, I want to count on you, as a respected and honest person to handle this transaction with sincerity, trust and confidentiality.
I have decided to seek a confidential co-operation with you in the execution of the deal described Hereunder for the benefit of all parties and hope you will keep it as a top secret because of the nature of this transaction. Within the Ministry of Mining and Natural resources where I work as Director of Project Implemention and with the cooperation of four other top officials, we have in our possession as overdue payment bills totaling Fourteen Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars (US$14,500,000.) which we want to transfer abroad with the assistance and cooperation of a foreign company/individual to receive the said fund on our behalf or a reliable foreign non-company account to receive such funds. More so, we are handicapped in the circumstances, as the South Africa Civil Service Code of Conduct does not allow us to operate offshore account hence your importance in the whole transaction.
This amount $14.5m represents the balance of thetotal contract value executed on behalf of my Department by a foreign contracting firm, which we the officials over-invoiced deliberately.Though the actual contract cost have been paid to the original contractor, leaving the balance in the tune of the said amount which we have in principles gotten approval to remit by Key tested Telegraphic Transfer (K.T.T) to any foreign bank account you will provide by filing in an application through the Ministry of Justice here in South Africa for the transfer of rights and privileges of the former contractor to you.
I have the authority of my partners involved to propose that should you be willing to assist us in the transaction, your share of the sum will be 30% of the $14.5 million, 60% for us and 10% for taxation and miscellaneous expenses. The business itself is 100% safe, on your part provided you treat it with utmost secrecy and confidentiality. Also your area of specialization is not a hindrance to the successful execution of this transaction. I have reposed my confidence in you and hope that you will not disappoint me. Endeavor to contact me immediately through my e-mail address to confirm whether or not you are interested in this deal. If you are not, it will enable me scout for another foreign partner to carry out this deal. I want to assure you that my partners and myself are in a position to make the payment of this claim possible provided you can give us a very strong Assurance and guarantee that our share will be secured and please, remember to treat this matter very confidential , because we will not comprehend with any form of exposure as we are still in active Government Service .Once again, remember that time is of great essence in this transaction.
I wait in anticipation of your fullest co-operation.
Yours faithfully, Dr. Vincent Makori

Lol, no, not quite. I had just always pictured LFD as this scrawny little kid for some reason (no offense, LFD). It's just always a bit of a surprise to see what someone looks like after you have already formed a mental picture of them in your head (based usually on nothing at all but intuitions, which are usually wrong about such things).
If I remember correctly, you and jon were both a bit taken aback by what I look like... how did you think I looked before you saw a pic of me?

NO MORE! I give! I can't take it any more... heh... had you going there for a sec...
I like mine, mostly because it kind of looks like me IRL. Except I'm usually not as cheerful. Actually, it looks like he's getting ready to yell at somebody. That fits you perfectly. [/i]Gee, thanks. Hmmmm... sorry... I was thinking that he was getting ready to yell at some trolls. That fits better.
lets see how many quote boxes we can cascade Well, here's one more...
lol, this is kinda fun. Oh yeah, this was the last day that I had to endure the torture of algebra again! I got a B and im goin on to Geometry baby!! Eventually, this will come to break the internet. I really don't see it getting that large. But can you imagine the headlines? INTERNET DESTROYED WORLDWIDE AS DIRECT RESULT OF GEEKS QUOTING EACH OTHER!
bigger...
I don't think it will be that bad, but it will get to the point where the first quote has every word on a separate line. That's when things will get really confusing.
Internet Farked by a couple of farkers..
why do we have to start all over again?
Sorry... I probably should have put <sarcasm> tags around that.
it's ok.
I wonder when we'll just get tired of this?
heh, it looks like half a circle.
I don't know what you mean...
my eyes hurt..i hope we break it soon, before my eyes explode
no i wont stop, we're trying to break the net
GO GO GO!
One more time!
Eventually, something has got to give. Nah. This can go on for quite some time yet.
Wow... I have to scroll to the right to see Demo's original post.
Oh don't be such a baby!

When I'm really, really pissed off and frustrated, I play guitar. That kills it every time. I can get a lot of rage out that way that is sometimes difficult to express verbally. Some things can only be done through music, I think. That's when I'm really pissed though. If I'm just in a bad mood or something, I just go into a political thread on FARK and shred some uninformed, opinionated net-morons. Usually after slapping a few farkers around I feel quite a bit better. You know the type: "I have an opinion on THIS... and I don't know SHIT about THIS, but this is my opinion on it, even though I've never spent even 30 seconds thinking about it.... and everyone who disagrees with me SUCKS." I usually gut people like that in three posts or less. Puts me in a good mood almost immediately. Nothing quite like a good punching bag....

I saw them in concert in NYC back in '95 because my then-girlfriend got free tickets to the show off of one of the radio stations. They weren't that great live, though I do like one or two of their songs.
I enjoyed the opening band better.... some band called "Velvet Crush" or something like that.
