So my new minion at work, this guy named Nate, is in a band, and we got to talking music yesterday afternoon. He gave me a copy of the CD they recorded last year before he left work yesterday.

I was kind of like "uh, yeah, okay" but accepted it graciously and told him I'd give it a listen.

I'm pretty impressed. It's rough around the edges and some tracks are way too long, but they're pretty inspired, and original. They're all competent musicians, and I really like the vocalist.

While original, you can tell their main influences. I hear some Helmet-influenced riffs in the guitars (I'm planning on asking Nate if he digs Helmet... he's their main guitarist). The overall dark-and-muddy mood and sound of their tracks is very Tool-like, but I can hear some Staind in there in parts.

As an overall, they're pretty strong for a local band. If I knew anything about producing, I'd ask them if I could produce their next album. I think I could really clean their sound up and push them in an edgier direction that could really get some attention in a good way.

Anyway, I'm giving their disc another listen right now. I've been told I can share their stuff if anyone's interested, so if anyone wants to hear it, I can host it for a while. Just send me a PM and I'll give you a link. Otherwise, it looks like they have some samples on their site.

You said it was a guy at work. Are they a "hobby" band? Or are they looking to quit their day jobs and follow a music career (if something good comes along)? Just curious. They do sound good. Lotsa potential. I say go for it, hoss - the "re-producing" ...
Take their CD and do what you feel needs to be done (yup - w/out permission - you aint gonna be selling or performing it or anything like that). See if you can mold their sound. Ya never know; you might just have the knack (read:EAR) for it. I would encourage you to. Then if you think it IS much better; let them hear it and make your offer.

Good luck - to them; and you , if you go forward with that; you re-producing re-producer!

Not sure... Nate works in IT, but they do play a lot of gigs, and they seem pretty tight.

Well, I lack the equipment, necessary software, and actual technical knowledge to do a "re-produce" of their album. But I'd love to give it a try. I know just what I'd do with each track. As I gave it my first listen-through it was going through my head how I would have done it differently, and I do think it would be an objective improvement in almost every case -- not just my own preference.

They have potentially what I would call a "commercial" sound without coming across as overdone or too contrived. It's the sweet spot from a marketing perspective. I have to wonder what they would do if given just a little direction and a nudge or two in the right places.
