Best date evah?
« on: July 03, 2004, 09:26:24 AM »

So I got the GF a new mobo the other day so we could play NWN together. And I installed it in an old case I had laying around (I scarfed the old full tower case for my Slack10 box :-)

I'd been having issues with the comp crashing though so I decided to update the BIOS. There is a first time for everything and this was the time I've ever  had the flash fail, resulting in a dead mobo.

Next day we took the box in to the computer store, they checked it over and confirmed my diagnosis of a dead BIOS and gave me a new mobo. But we determined that the measly 150watt PS in the old case just wasn't cutting it and the likley cause of the problems. Resulting in picking up a spanky new case as well.

In the car on the way home the GF says to me: "Stop fucking with my computer, and I want to help put this one together."  What's a guy to do but say "Ok. In fact, you can build it yourself."

After getting home we spent the next hour or so with her putting her computer together and me explaining what went where and how to find pin 1 and make sure the cables are connected the right way on all the drives and the USB headers etc. Very fun.

Then we got a thunder and lightning storm so we had to shut everything down for a while and didn't get to play and NWN last night. But you can't have everything.

i've had some pretty nice dates like that... but when i try to teach something to my GF she seems to get a bit distracted too easily. She'll learn some day.

I just recently bought my girlfriend one of these (with all the stuff that generally goes along with a computer inside) for our fourth anniversary. We spent part of yesterday messing around with the thing and installing crap.

It was fun!

Cool. I like those SFF cases, but she doesn't or we'd have probably gone with one of them.

The funny thing is that way back when before I knew her she was one of those tough hard rock loving out smoking behind the school girls. Now she's *gasp* respectable. ;-)

Damnit I wish a date could go like that. Instead, I usually end up with some prick who wants to have sex on the first date. Buying computer parts for your girlfriend is really cute. I find that... err... romantic. In a weird sorta way.

*laughs* All the cool geeky guys are probably too afraid to talk to you. You'll probably end up having to ask one of them out unfortunatly.

Yes, that's usually how it goes.  I have a friend that used to post around here (Revka) that is a really cool guy, and well versed in all things geek, but I'm pretty sure girls need to be the ones to ask him out.  He's the kind of guy who will sit quietly in a room full of people and not say a word.

And not even because he's shy or anything... he just prefers to observe and listen rather than participate, I think.

Oooh... those are cool.  I'm still kind of drooling over a lot of things over at CappuccinoPC.com.  I do think that when I decide to lay down some cash for a new desktop PC, I just may go with one of those.

Yup, I never dated in high school because no one ever asked me out.  I ended up marrying my best friend and never having really dated.

Any idea how much noise the fans on those make? I've heard a lot of complaints about the hum that SFF computers generate, but so far the model I got for the S/O has been WHISPER QUIET

Aww! That's cute, lol. One retarded thing about high school is how everyone thinks people are weird if they go out with a geek. Guys ask me out, but rarely geeks. The sad thing is, there's not a lot of geeks in my high school. I don't hang out with a geeky crowd @ school so they don't really see me as a geek until I talk. I guess that can be intimidating. Every school year I hope for some new geeks. I am the only female grade 9 (now 10) geek in our school. Me and my geek friends keep searching, but no hope. I've dated a geek but there was the problem that he was reeally shy with me. He asked me out again yesterday, so we'll see how this turns out. I need an (even slightly) extroverted geek. Is that an oxymoron? I'm probably hopeless... :(

You see, there are stealth geeks.  I had the geek mindset, but kinda blended in with all sorts of cliques.  I was shy and didn't really fit in anywhere.  The point is, there are tons of us out there who are shy and could use an assertive female to do the asking.

I still look for other geeks in my school, but there are very few true geeks out there. I'm talking about the kind that run Linux (Even though I don't myself), or the kind that can build their own computer and try to tweak it so they can get the most out of it.

There are a few in my school that can format a drive and install Windows, and put together a computer with some difficulty, but other than that, there aren't die hard geeks in my school. At least none that I know of.

*Sigh* The world needs more.

About the asking out thing, I guess that's a good idea. I usually just wait for guys to ask me out. I've asked a few guys out, but I'm usually afraid they'll say no or something. That would be horrible. Fear of failure, hm?
