It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.
« on: March 27, 2007, 02:57:31 PM »

So a couple of nights ago, Number 1 son and I were watching Family Guy, and at one point Peter briefly bangs out an accoustic version of Rock Lobster. Number 1 son then did his old man proud by asking, in a slightly awed and excited voice, "Dad... Is that a real song?"

"Why, yes!" I assured him, adding, "I have it on vinyl, but I will be glad to get you a CD later this week. It's by a band called The B-52's, on their first album."

"That's ok... I'll be right back," he threw over his shoulder as he ran up to his room. Ten minutes and less than ten dollars later, he had the album on his iPod, and was marvelling at Planet Claire, Dance This Mess Around, and the iconic Rock Lobster.

I mean, it never occured to him to buy the CD. I asked him, "Don't you want to have the hard copy, like for the cover art, or in case your PC blows up?" His reply was that CDs just get in the way and clutter up his room.

So... What does this portend for the future of CD and DVD sales?

We have at least two mega-musicophiles here. Pbsaurus, Demosthenes -- are you going to continue buying CDs and DVDs to the dieing end, or are you already changing your buying patterns?

How long before these discs of plastic are seen by everyone the same as they are seen by my teenage son -- as completely useless?

The only time I ever buy CDs is when I can find them secondhand for a decent price. I'd be more than happy to buy a CD for five dollars if the store was open 24 hours a day (as I am). As of yet they're still insanely priced, and so I shall continue to download to my heart's content. I burn CDs to play in the car and to bring with me, but I find electronic media to be a lot more convenient all around. An mp3 player is a lot smaller than a discman, and is a lot sturdier.

I hate CDs. I only use them like cheap napkins to wrap my tunes up in when I have to take them with me on the road. Which will soon be over, as well, soon as I complete my dash/console rebuild - it has a shelf specifically for my laptop; which plugs straight into my stereo unit. I'll have ALL my tunes at my fingertips.
I even upload to my wesbite instead of burning backup CDs. I've only come across a handfull of non-music CDs that were reliable over time/systems. I HAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEE burning a backup CD; checking it to make sure it burned ok; only to find out when I actually need to use it that it wont fucking read.
Just who tha fuck made all the different "formats" and disc types and ROMs vs. RWs; +-RW, -RW's, +RWs, etc so fricken common anyway? You actually only need:
1: CD-ROM- cant burn to it; has progs or music on it.
2: CD-R - can burn ONCE to it; progs or music.
3: CD-RW <-(and I just mean "REWRITABLE"; Weird Tingly Feeling is up with CD-+RW, CD+RW, and CD-RW?) You can burn to it till your heart is content; over and over. Progs and music.
4:DVDs - exactly the same as 1 - 3; only you can burn MASSIVE amounts of data on the recordables.
And a DVD BURNER ought to be able to READ ANY FUCKING DISC you put in it. No?

I like CDs.  However, I strongly disagree with the business practices and arrogant attitude of the labels associated with the RIAA.

As such, I cannot in good conscience support their business model so long as those practices and that attitude continue.

My solution for several years has been to use sites like RIAA Radar to see what affiliations a disc or an artist has with the RIAA before purchasing.  If it's "safe", I buy it without a second thought.

If it is on a label known to sue 10 year old girls and terminally ill old people who don't even own computers on their "copyright infringement" witch hunt, I search for it on Amazon.com and purchase it used.

True, the evil labels received money for that copy of the disc at one point, since it's used... but they don't receive anything additional by my act of purchasing it.

Since I purchase a large number of things in this way, that means the RIAA affiliated labels are missing out on a large chunk of business... not due to market forces, not due to piracy, not due to catalog.

But due solely to their behavior.

As long as CDs continue to be produced and made available used, I will continue to purchase them in this manner.

I still buy them, but mostly the used ones, unless I'm buying directly from a band member at a show or a band's wesbite.  I did buy 10,000 days new when it was released, but mostly I haven't been buying new CDs for decades now.  Oooh, scratch that.  I did buy about 50 or so at the Tower liquidation sales.  Forgot about that.  But most of them were only a couple bucks each.  Anyway, I've spent only $.99 at iTunes.  Bought Radar Love for Sandy, since I actually only have it on a mix cassette recorded off an old roommate's LP.  Don't like the fact that the iTunes stuff is not portable, so I don't think I could go for that model, so I'll be buying CDs as long as they're still around.

Yeah it's probably only a matter of time before the RIAA goes after purchasers of used CDs.

Oh it wouldn't suprise me if they try that within ten years. I heard a while ago they went after a dentist who played the music at work or some lunatic thing like that. Fuck the RIAA and all its many insideous tactics.

I'm surprised they haven't added a beginning track where they lecture you on piracy and crap like that where they won't allow you to go to the next track or fast forward, sort of like the MPAA forces you to watch before DVDs will play.

Does anybody know how that particular system works? I was thinking it'd be fun to add my own personalized anti-piracy warnings on all my bootleg DVDs from now on.

Most decent, professional DVD authoring software will allow you to do all sorts of fun, crazy things with your DVDs. From what I've heard though, it can be very frustrating trying to get the more complicated things like elaborate menus, easter eggs, etc to work right.

I buy used CDs whenever possible and support local artists (namely, everyone I know who's in a band).

Josh performs "Rock Lobster" whenever he does karaoke.

I do a pretty mean Fred Schneider.  "Rock Lobster" and "Love Shack" are karaoke staples of mine as well.
