Catch 22 - Post-Modernism?
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:04:01 PM »

I'm getting some work done on my semester reading project for American Literature, and my question is: Would Catch 22 be considered Post-Modernism?

And, if not, what era of American Literature would Catch 22 fall under?

It's far more neo-Darwinistic and proto-Nietzschian than Post Modernistic.

O.o We haven't learned about those eras yet (it's a high school course), but if you had to say... would it fall under Post Modernism?

How about you pay attention in English instead of asking us?

If I had to read and decipher Crime & Punishment my senior year, you can figure out Joseph Heller.

Oh yes, I'd say it even falls into Prepaid-Post Modernism (if one wanted to be unnecessarily altruistic and possibly even ironically facetious!).

You may find the work of Samuel J. Hunt useful in your reasearchings, for it was he that enabled me to do the groundbreaking work that I have only briefly revealed thus far.

here is a link to save you googling time:

Another concept you may find useful is Cubic Time (related to but not integral to your understanding of Time Control), but you can google that for yourself.

Don't say the crazy internet people never helped you!

I was gonna mention the Cubic Time Stacking; seems it certainly would be useful in this case.

I've yet to find a case that Cubic Time Stacking COULDN'T help!

Um....not doin' your homework for ya.  Also, Lit theory was like...4 semesters ago.  I don't remember if I even had breakfast this morning, let alone what I may or may not have had.

Ah-hahaha. This is funny, because I was going to start a Catch-22 thread a few weeks ago. I was reading it for the first time, and I was getting pretty fired up about it. It was funny, moving, profound... I got about half way through, up to the bit about Luciana, and realized I would never read it to the end.

I'm not sure why, and have been pondering it. Something really started pissing me off about it. Not the story, not the writing, both of which are exceptional. But more like, Ok, I know all these people through and through and don't want to know them any more. There is nothing they can teach me any more. I don't like them.

I think Catch-22, like Vonnegut's books, belong to a short and increasingly insignificant moment in time.

Insignificant because if it's true that an entire generation of American men lost their innocence in WW-II and Korea, this experience did nothing to avert Vietnam and everything after that. It has taught nothing. And Heller knew damn well this is true -- that's why the book is dripping with morbid self-pity, cynicism and despair.

What Ivan said.

You summed that up in ways I've been trying to put into words for years about that book.
