Immigration Question
« on: May 18, 2007, 05:44:13 AM »

What point does having to go back to ones' home country only to turn around and come back to the US serve? The rest of the conditions and requirements, etc, sort of make sense in their own way, except this one. So you've been here for, say, five years. Now you have to go back for. . . what?  To visit? Vacation? Get those CDs you left on the nightstand five years ago? Normally I'd be sure there was a good reason; whether I knew what it was or not, but this is our government; so that pretty much negates any assupmtion of reason.
Does anyone know what is the reason for the trip back to home country?

Maybe to visit friends or relatives who didn't come with you to the US?

Heh, you'd pretty much have to. Unless they expect that people who have been here that long still own a home there.
Plus, this requirement only applies to the head of household. Everyone else can stay while they go back and come back.
I just don't get it.

Maybe to go get all the other friends and relatives who didn't come with you to the US the first time so they can just cut to the front of the line while everybody who actually decided to try to follow the law by applying for citizenship from their own home countries get the finger, but hey it'd be racist if it were any other way right?

Fixed.

Hey! The more you bring over, the more free stuff you get.  I had a friend in grade school who immigrated over from Russia.  She has seven brothers and sisters and the government gave her family a free house and two cars.  I probably won't even be able to get that with a Bachelor's degree.

I'm not going off on a personal tangent...not at all...

The returning to your home country is no more stupid than the $5,000 fine.

The illegals are supposedly taking the jobs the Americans won't do and for a wage that Americans won't take.
So, let's assume that they're making minimum wage and working 40 hours...  As if!

40 X 5.75 = 222.80
Of course, they're using a stolen SSAN, so there would be taxes taken out of that.  Let's just say $200 for the sake of ease.
$200 X 52 = $10,400

So, in reality, what the government is asking them to do is:
Give up 1/2 year's wages
Quit your job
Return to a country where you have no job and no prospect of finding work
Live there until the US government decides to process your paperwork
Then, return to the USA where your job has been taken by an illegal alien who came in after the amnesty bill was passed.

...yeah.  That'll work.

Under what program did "the government" give a Russian immigrant family a free house and two cars? I have never heard of such a thing.

Stories heard in grade school should be taken with considerable grains of salt, and certainly not repeated as fact without substantial corroboration.

There are certainly cases when families are invited here and given all kinds of goodies by employers. Perhaps, if members of this family were employed by the government, like, say, by the CIA or NASA, something like that could be said. But there is certainly no "cars for ex-tsars" welfare program.

From what I can tell from this, it's like they've tried to please everybody and wound up with this horrible abortion of a plan.

"Ok, Ok, we'll offer a type of amnesty, but they'll need to pay for it and then leave, but not all of them, only some of them, the others get miniature American flags. Sound good?"

Comedy "Cars for ex-tzars" option.

Stories heard in grade school should be taken with considerable grains of salt, and certainly not repeated as fact without substantial corroboration.

Wait, so you mean that the story about getting your head cut off by saying "Bloody Mary" three times in front of a mirror at midnight may not be entirely ground in fact? My mind is blown.

That's 3 spellings now.

Царь

Russian is a nearly-phonetic language.

The first character (Ц) is a compound consonant, pronounced "ts", as in anTS.

The second character is pronounced like the "a" in "ahh". Actually, it's closer to the "y" in "rye".

The third letter is the russian "r", which is rolled with the tip of the tounge up against the upper pallate. Sort of like the Italian "r" in "roma", or the Spanish "r" in "ariba", or the Japanese "r" in "arigato".

The fourth character is the "soft sign". It means that the preceding consonant is softened. Instead of rolling the "r" with the tip of your tongue against your pallate, you roll it while flattening your tongue up against the upper pallate, for a softening effect. The closest analogy I can think of off hand is the difference between a hard "c", as in "cat",  and the soft "c", as in "chat". Sort of.

Anyway, that's "tsar", or "czar", or "tzar".

I once tried for a few days to learn Russian with some old tapes the library had...it failed horribly (it didn't even have a book, I'm not sure if ANYONE has ever learned a language that way successfully). I hope to learn it someday still.

I grew up speaking Russian and English, so both were effortless. I took some French here and there, so I had a smattering when I travelled to France a few times. I was in France for only 2 or 3 weeks at a time, and I would feel just on the verge of breaking out into some semblance of fluency when I'd have to leave again. So my advice is to take a few classes to learn the very basics, then go there for a few months.

Same for me with German, only instead of classes I just married one. We would visit and be there... I think the longest time was five weeks. After about two weeks somehow I understood most of what everyone was saying; but I still wouldn't have been able to write it out. Speaking starts to get easier then, too, as you begin to think in that language instead of your native one and translating before speaking. Weird, yes, but it's true.
I SO wish I could speak and read Russian. Err... I mean, speak Russian/read Cyrillic. I've wanted to since back when they were known as "Threat Forces", lol. (For some reason, back in the eighties, the US military wouldn't actually say "Soviet military" , etc.;  it was always the ambiguous "Threat" force.)
How similar, ivan, is the vocabulary and grammar to German, btw? Is it totally different; only sounding similar due to the pronunciation techniques?

I don't know enough about German (or Russian, for that matter) grammar to give an accurate answer, but I bet your experience with the German language will make learning Russian a lot easier. Even though technically English and German are much more closely related than Russian and German, there are some things about Russian that a German-speaker would feel at home with, like for instance stringing together a bunch of words to make one long new word. And genders, and cases, and all that stuff.

... in addition to the rolling r, the "ch" at the back of the throat, and the other gutteral sounds not familiar to English speakers.

I speak English and French fluently, and am trying to learn Italian. Next language I learn (maybe Italian) I think I'll just move somewhere where it's spoken. With me I pick things up a lot faster when I'm in a situation where it's necessary (ie at work where I have a bit more job security because I'm able to speak Quebeqese). I think I could probably pick up Spanish inside two or three months if I moved to Mexico.

I know American English, bits of French, a few phrases in Cantonese, Tagalog, Vietnamese and enough Spanish to either get me laid or beat up depending on the situation.
