Can you guys help me, this is pretty frustrating and I'm not sure how to fix it.

Alright, I'm trying to install Windows XP SP2 on my friends computer. (It's actually a Cyberpower restore CD with XP SP2 on it... but it goes to the Windows XP Setup and everything...)

It keeps giving me various errors (STOP: 0x8E, etc...) that, when I look them up, indicate hardware/device driver problems. But I'm not sure which driver, and how to fix it!

Any suggestions?

What is the status of the current OS ?

Here is some reading on the "driver protection" feature in XP (bugs up when hit-listed drivers are on board).

Huh. That is funky. I'm sure you've disconnected any non-essential peripherals; so I can't understand what it would be "seeing" that would require a black-listed driver. Have you gone so far as to take out any non-essential cards, such as NICs, sound cards, etc?

I'm not at the computer right this moment, but I believe the only things attached to the computer are the CD-ROM, the HD, and the video card.

The only thing left is the mobo; maybe bus drivers, RAID drivers or something such that loads from the bios?

It sounds like you need a genuine XP CD. The restore CD's are geared toward the hardware found in the original computer it was made for. That is likely what is causing your errors. Unless of course it is the original computer that the CD came with.

That is the problem, then. That restore CD is unique to the computer's hardware from which it came from.

His computer had been upgraded by the company. (And they didn't give him a new cd! I didn't know this...)

Also, I didn't realize that it would affect it that much... woops.

Those are some of the errors.

(I forget the specific stats)
The Motherboard is an A8N SLI Deluxe (Asus)
The HD is made by Western Digital
It's 1 gig of RAM

I did a mem test, and the memory came back without any errors. The hard-drive is brand new, and seems to be working fine.

It crashes at random points.

Alright, I've had this problem before. Here's what ya do:

Located on the motherboard, next to the battery, is a set of 3 jumpers:

[ ][ ][ ]

Now, more than likely, your jumper set either looks like this:

[ ]

Or

[ ]

What you do is switch the jumpers from the one set, to the other. Leave it like that for about 30 seconds. This gives time to let the battery source leave the ROM-BIOS, thus reseting everything: registries(for blacklisted pereferals), internal clock, EVERYTHING!

Then you can set everything when you install the OS.

They still use CMOS clear jumpers? I've seen new (and non-apple) system boards that just have a little button you push to do it now.

I just bought an ASUS motherboard about two weeks ago and it has a jumper to clear the BIOS. Some things will never change, I guess.

On a side note, if you are going to attempt to clear the BIOS, don't power the system up when the jumper is in the clear position. Some manufactures claim that doing so can damage or render the board useless if you power it up while the jumper is in the clear position. Though, I did it once and luckily nothing happened.

It won't hurt anything. All the jumper does is prevent a current from going through the motherboard.

I openned up my computer, it's about a year old, and it has a set of jumpers.

I tried it once with the jumper in the clear position. It shot fire about three feet from all the USB ports and the CPU popped and flew off the board and stuck in the sheetrock about four feet away. Both sticks of RAM melted down all over and into the IDE jacks and the video card burned for five days.

See now, when I did it, it had effect on the internals of the PC. However, my neighbor did burst into green flames and shit butterflies at precisely the time I powered it up. Coincidence? You be the judge.
