While at work tonight, someone made the statement that "If you own a handgun you obviously intend on shooting someone."

I thought it was dumbest thing I'd ever heard, that because I own several projectile firing weapons including a handgun, I must intend on shooting someone. Since that was never the intention behind me owning a hadngun (hobby), nor a rifle (we have coyotes roamin' around-no joke) nor a bow and quiver (hobby).

I'm just curious what everyone else's opinion about this is.

 Sounds like they have the common misconception that the only 'function' of handguns is to kill another person. While it's understandable to initially have this misunderstanding; this lack of real information should prompt one to research the issue. Handguns are - first and foremost - a weapon. This is the reason they were created. That doesn't preclude other uses, however, such as hobby; which is by far the biggest reason firearms are still manufactured and sold to the (qualified) public. If every owner of a handgun was out to shoot someone; there'd be nobody left.

It is a dream of contrary. Being forced to work with such a non-personable person until a specific time signifies your desire to leave now. By suppressing this natural desire, and staying until the end of your shift, you succeed in two things; collecting a check, and finally being able to fulfil your desires guilt-free.

I'd give him a new axiom: Everyone knows that gun totin' lesbians have no sense of remorse and regularly use opinionated assholes for target practice.

i have seven tattoos.. does this make me a lesbian?

also, i hate- absolutely hate- guns. that being said, i would never accuse someone of having them simply to harm others. how asinine. you co-worker sounds like a douchebag.

I don't mind guns. They're fun to shoot (when done in a safe manner).

But I hate tattoos. I think they absolutely ruin any person's sex appeal. Same goes for piercings in any place but the ear-lobe (and that's an exception only because 978 out of every 1003 people have their ear-lobes pierced).

Honestly, I don't even like most makeup.

I have both a handgun and a shotgun simply to harm others.  Do I enjoy going to the shooting range?  Yes, but not enough to own guns and shoot as a hobby.  I own them for the express purpose of self-defense, and I would use them in such a manner with no compunction.
