WiseDom Teeth?!

Wisdom Teeth. I don't get it.
I'm 28 - yesterday they got cut out. It hurts.
Are they part of the list of items that the human body just doent need anymore, because of evolution? Like tonsils and other bizarre redundant bits and bobs floating about the body?

We used to be sharks and we could replace our teeth at will.  But then Jeebus rode the dinosaurs and we stopped that nonsense.

I still have mine, and I'm really old.

Just the other day, my hygenist remarked on how well they are doing, and how rarely she sees wisdom teeth in one so aged as I.

I also still have 1 baby tooth, but its days are drawing to a close.

I have a full set of 32 but I've been listening to Devo a lot lately so I'm anticipating those shark teeth coming in any day now.

I also have all four of my wisdom teeth.  They came in without any problems, and they've never caused any since then.  Aside from the teeth impacting when they come in, I really don't even understand why so many people "have to" have them removed.

Because most people's don't come in straight. A lot of people's wisdom teeth are usually either sideways (inside the jaw); or will crowd the other, existing teeth when it comes in (causing further issues with other teeth as well). Even if it hasn't come through, a wisdom tooth can cause a lot of pain and discomfort that you probably wouldn't at first associate with a tooth; even if it's not impacted. I've had two removed (so far), and have to have the other two removed as well. Two of mine were totally sideways; the "chewing surface" was facing forward, and actually pushing on the next tooth beside it.

As far as why we have them, my theory would be that in the distant past, we normally had much more serious dental problems as a norm; probably losing several teeth by adulthood. These teeth probably originally showed up during adulthood to replace teeth lost previously. Some animals do the same thing; but they still need to; since they don't brush and floss. Since we 'civilized' and generally take better care of ourselves; we don't lose teeth as early normally; thus the wisdom teeth now 'seem' unnecessary.
 That would be my hypothesis.

That's what happened to me. It's been about 6 years now, and over half of my original teeth are broke off. Makes biting into an apple very painful.

Yeah, I had that second row of teeth thing happening too. Except it was only one tooth. It was in the upper region, but very much to the middle of my palate, as if it were growing from back in behind my nose caverns...not sexy...

I also just picked up that Japanese dudes are able to get stem cells from wisdom teeth...extracted from a little girl frozen for three years...the teeth were frozen, not the, um, little girl...

Eh, I have three wisdom teeth, but they don't need taken out yet. :/
They actually said that they'll only take out one of them, because they other two will grow in straight. C:
