Dead and Breakfast is my favortie zombie musical.

I picked that up at Blockbuster this afternoon.  I'm pretty psyched to see it.

20. The Quick and the Undead (*)

Watching my dog take a dump is more entertaining than The Quick and the Undead.  Cool concept...awful, awful execution.

21. Zombi 3 (**)

It's Fulci, and there are a few minor gross-out moments, but still...skip this one and watch its predecessor.

22. Dead and Breakfast (***)

I'm usually not too thrilled with horror-comedies, but Dead and Breakfast wasn't all that bad.  There are some cool scenes, and the humor generally works pretty well.

Compared to some of the shit I've been watching lately, this was downright refreshing.  I haven't seen it since I was eight or nine, so the notable cast was a surprise.  Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sonny Bono, June Lockhart, Frank Welker, Boxy from the original Battlestar Galactica...wow.  I'm gonna watch its unrelated, nauseating sequel today...Troll 2.  Pray for me.

25. 20 Million Miles to Earth (****)

Harryhausen FTW!  Apparently he recently worked with producers to make a colorized version, the way he wanted it to be seen in 1957 but couldn't due to budget reasons.  They didn't do a half-bad job.

It gets an extra star for making me laugh hysterically at the (beyond) horrible acting and effects.  Bonus: I no longer fear death.

27. The Incredible Shrinking Man (****)

For a '50s sci-fi flicks, the effects were pretty damned inventive.  Nice action, and the story is actually pretty compelling.

Directed by Jack Arnold, who also did The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and It Came from Outer Space.  Good stuff.

I've seen the shitty sequels countless times on cable, but it occurred to me that I'd never seen the original the whole way through.  I was impressed.

32. Superman Returns (*)

Lame.  Supes and Lois were incredibly bland, and Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olson were overly cartoonish.  Also, I thought they'd play a little bit more with the idea of how the world would react to the return of Superman after five years' absence, but apparently not.

33. Dark Crystal (**)

Very bizarre.  The puppetry was great, but the voice acting sucked for the most part, most of the characters were annoying, and the story was pretty dull.  I'm curious as to why this movie has such a huge fanbase.

I love the original.  I don't acknowledge the sequels.

I can answer that with one word: Nostalgia.  Lots of people about my age saw Dark Crystal in the theater when they were in about 4th grade.  It was a landmark movie for the fantasy genre (at the time), so lots of us look back on it fondly.  I own it on DVD, and while it doesn't stand up to many others made since, the puppetry is really still astounding, and it weathers the years well.

I guess that's true, but it still seemed like a much-rehashed fantasy plot.  Then again, I love Batman Forever due to the nostalgia factor.

Fourth grade in '82...you make me feel like such a young'n.  :D

Discounting Labyrinth because I still haven't managed to see it, I think The Muppet Movie is probably my favourite of Henson's films.  It's the one that sticks out in my mind the most...Kermit sitting in the swamp, strumming a banjo and singing "Rainbow Connection."  Great stuff.

Growing up, Jim Henson's movies and TV specials were in non-stop syndication, and I loved them all.  I remember being four or five and hearing my dad say to me "You know, he died a few years ago."  I was floored.

If you were disappointed by the cheese factor in Dark Crystal, I suspect you won't like Labyrinth much at all then...  :-D

Strange Swedish vampire flick.  If you remove the vampire elements, it's just a coming-of-age film.  Lots of cool shots and dialogue.  I'd watch it again.

38. Splinter (*)

FilmSchoolRejects called this the best horror film of 2008.  They steered me wrong.  There were one or two neat scenes, but they weren't enough to make up for the horrible dialogue, acting and plot.

I wasn't expecting much from Next, mostly because I love Nicholas Cage but continue to be disappointed in the majority of his films since ConAir. Imagine how surprised I was to realize it was actually a pretty good flick - and I'm not just saying that because the last Cage film I watched was the Wicker Man.
