Migraines
« on: December 03, 2009, 02:14:03 PM »

When I was a kid I used to get frequent migraines.  When I say "migraine", I don't mean a simple headache -- anyone who's had a real migraine knows what I'm talking about -- I mean a phenomena that pretty much incapacitates you for the duration.

I used to get them at least a couple of times a month, sometimes as often as once a week.

Then, mysteriously, when I was 10 years old, they suddenly stopped.

I then went for 21 years without a migraine, and back in 2004 I started getting them again.  They're not as bad as they were when I was 10, not as severe, nor as frequent, but they're still no fun.  I'm home today because I have one.  It's down to a dull roar now, but still not great.

So I was curious to know how many of my fellow geeks here also suffer from this malady.

Occasionally.  Usually tied to a lag of a couple days after experiencing extreme stress.

I get them in the winter.  Haven't had any yet this year though.  It's always accompanied by extreme thirst.

The worst was a few years ago when I'd get them starting at the end of the school day and then have to go teach night school.  And those friggin kids were miserable.  I broke the glass on the overhead projector one day because they wouldn't shut up.  They didn't shut up after that either of course.  Haha.

Mine's mostly done with today.  Typically when they're over with I get really cold, and exhausted-type tired, so I just woke up from a nap.

I think I finally had a migraine last week on Thanksgiving. It was to the point where one of my eyes was tearing it hurt so bad. I decided the best thing to do would be to go to sleep... and it worked.

It's funny how we know why headaches occur, but we don't know what causes that cause.

Thankfully, I've never had a headache that couldn't be explained by sinuses.

Mine happen once a month. And yes, my doctor is fairly certain it's in relation to that other thing that happens once a month. The longest I've had a single migraine was three days straight, medication recently has been keeping it down to a few hours. Apparently, they run in my family.

I get them maybe a couple of times a year at most, not completely debilitating but you really don't want to be anywhere near me when I have one.  Only cure is a nap in a cool, colder the better, dark and quiet room for an hour or two.  That usually takes enough off so that I can function when combined with some caffeine/aspirin.

Sinus stuff runs in the family, I can tell when a low pressure front is coming because I get a certain kind of headache.

What, payday? Yeah, I used to wake up with a headache the morning after payday too.

Ah, the bittersweet memories of a misspent youth.

I get migraines fairly routinely.  Routinely enough that I carry Imitrex pretty much everywhere...

I'm one of the lucky ones I guess. I have only had them during times of consistent long term stress and even then only once or twice. Maybe you're thinking too hard and causing a cascade failure in your synapses.
