People who have experienced a loss of sense of smell or other problems after use of the affected Zicam products should contact their health care professional. The loss of sense of smell can adversely affect a person’s quality of life, and can limit the ability to detect the smell of gas or smoke or other signs of danger in the environment.

I can attest to that. I lived without a sense of smell for several years. My problem was purely obstruction -- nasal swelling, inflamation, deviated septum, whatever. I've had it back, on and off, mostly on, for the last 3-4 years, and never take it for granted. The first time I smelled an orange after years of nothing made me weep.

What they don't mention here is that 85% of what we call "flavor" is actually aroma. Without smell, I could taste sweet, salty, bitter, sour, soapy, and metallic. Nothing beyond that. I could not tell the difference between tomato sauce with oregano and tomato sauce without. And yes, I've almost passed out from breathing amonia fumes without knowing it.

This is the first statement from medical professionals I've ever read that takes this condition seriously. Whenever I complained about this to doctors, I always got the feeling they either didn't entirely believe me, or didn't really see what the big deal was.

I can't even imagine. Of course, I've had the occasional loss of smell / taste due to congestion but nothing more than that. One of my favourite activities is trying to identify familiar scents and analyzing the memories it churns up.

Hey, you too? I find myself thinking back about past memories that way pretty often.

I'm pretty fond of my sense of smell (never thought I'd actually type that). Scary to think what it'd be like without it.

I've actually taken Zicam to get high before, it is pretty intense and euphoric.  I've only done it 2 or 3 times and never had any olfactory problems.

If only your common sense were as sound as your sense of smell.

Galvy could probably lose his entire sense of smell and his common sense still wouldn't be as sound. If that works as an insult. Dammit, I did it again!
