Texas just beat Arizona, bar none!
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:06:53 PM »

We've had some epic fuckery going on here in the Arizona state legislature for quite some time now (in my opinion).  Looks like Texas just put our asshattery to shame.  Granted, this isn't the Texas state legislature, but it is the new official platform of the Texas Republican party.

Wow. I didnt think the Arizona Immigration Law was bad; but this is just waaay 'tarded. I just lost a lotta respect for Texas. How is this even close to being constitutional?

At this point there's nothing in place to be judged as either constitutional or unconstitutional.  It's the Texas Republican Party's platform and they're free to bluster about whatever they want.  Now, should they move forward with enacting laws...they'll get slapped down.

For the moment it's nothing more than morally repugnant grandstanding.

apparently there is no middle ground between "enforcing the law" and "leaving people the fuck alone in their own houses" i mean seriously, who would vote for this?

They're out there. They're probably closet gays themselves. But they're out there.

+1 for "epic fuckery".  That's about the only term that adequately describes that attitude.

My general rule of thumb when it comes to gay rights is to assess any position by replacing the word "gay" or "homosexual" or "same sex" with any other minority and see how it sounds with today's sensibilities.

For example (from the linked Texas GOP platform from the article):
Quote
No parent/grandparent should be denied court ordered visitation, because of jurisdictional disputes between states. We also believe that no homosexual or any individual convicted of child abuse or molestation should have the right to custody or adoption of a minor child, and that visitation with minor children by such persons should be prohibited but if ordered by the court limited to supervised periods.

Becomes:
Quote
No parent/grandparent should be denied court ordered visitation, because of jurisdictional disputes between states. We also believe that no black or any individual convicted of child abuse or molestation should have the right to custody or adoption of a minor child, and that visitation with minor children by such persons should be prohibited but if ordered by the court limited to supervised periods.

If it sounds repugnant, then it still should when it's talking about homosexuals.

Here's another example from the same platform:
Quote
The law should assure mothers of a choice in selecting a traditional home for their children at the time of terminating their rights for adoption. We oppose mandatory open adoption and adoption by homosexuals.

Becomes:
Quote
The law should assure mothers of a choice in selecting a traditional home for their children at the time of terminating their rights for adoption. We oppose mandatory open adoption and adoption by Jews.

This one too:
Quote
We are opposed to any granting of special legal entitlements, refuse to recognize, or grant special privileges including, but not limited to: marriage between persons of the same sex (regardless of state of origin)

Becomes:

Quote
We are opposed to any granting of special legal entitlements, refuse to recognize, or grant special privileges including, but not limited to: marriage between persons of a different race (regardless of state of origin)

Texas is the King Troll State.

Oh, wait, they're serious.

I, for one, encourage the Texas GOP to aggressively stick by their platform as defined in the article. Show those damn Godless heathens and sodomites that you won't tolerate any of that kind of debauchery in your fair state.

And remain, forevermore, a permanent fringe minority party that will never hold any serious elected positions of power in this country ever again.

Yes, stick to your ridiculous platform and meanwhile the rest of country will sleep a little better at night knowing that you nutjobs will never hold power again.

I was already embarrassed when we put the gay marriage ban in the constitution so you'll get no arguments from me.
I think I have stated before that I would be all for secession, except for the reality that cranks like this would then have actual power.

Recognition of marriage shouldn't be a funciton of the government anyway!

Sure. That's why libertarians tend to stay out of these debates. Some argue that voting for official recognition of same sex marriage only further promotes the government's involvement in marriage. But one ought to weigh this principle against more important principles of social equality.

There should be no tax breaks, because there should be no taxes.

Ever hear of the marriage penalty.  Two income married couples actually pay more in taxes than if they filed separately.

Correct.  Neither should the tax penalties.

Either that, or they should both apply to everyone.

Are you aware that simply getting married entitles you to something like 900 some odd governmental (or pseudo governmental) benefits/rights/etc.?  I'll try to dig up the exact number (and it may be specific to Arizona...other states may differ), but I remember reading that little factoid a couple years ago banning gay marriage went on the ballot here in Arizona.
