New Geek Preparing for Combat
« on: December 28, 2010, 10:08:29 PM »

Hello, I am currently studying the Asvab and physically preparing to enter the Marines, and I found this site while trying to figure out a problem on my vista start up where a grey box appears with an unload button. This is annoying because normally I just click the unload button, but have no idea how it got there and do not want to click it again.

I just finished respawning my pc for the third time in a year and my pc crashed while I was registering mcafee, which reads multiple intruders on my network and a constant :slap over my pc and what I can use it for. This has also lead me to create a password on everything I use.

Regardless, my question is "How do I get rid of this box and does anyone have an idea what it is?" I am worried that it might be some spy or hacker program.

Isn't that a test for vocational ability?  How do you study for it?

Technically you aren't supposed to, when I took it it was simply a test to see where you were at that point and what field that qualified you for. As far as the problem at hand I personally don't know, but I have never had success with McAfee on any of my systems in the past.

step one: uninstall vista

step two: install literally anything else

you're good.

step three (optional, may not apply): use any antivirus except mcafee or norton

It really isn't a good idea to study for the ASVAB because it is not used to see what you can regurgitate, but what you know and how it can be applied to an MOS (or respective branch job category).

Yes it is the Armed service vocational aptitude test. I already past, but I want to become a commisoned officer and higher scores lead to better job opportunities. They are mainly concerned with Arithmatic, Mathamatics, word knowledge, and paragraph comprehension. There are 5 other subtest electronics, auto, shop, science, mechanical comprehension, and assembling objects.

All the test are timed, and I have been using lumosity to increase my brain power, and I have been looking into trachenbergs math program. My main area I need to work in is algebra. I know algebra, my focus is timing myself for each problem. 7 minutes for 18 problems; thats 39 seconds for each problem. Some I can figure out in 20 but others may take longer than a minute.

Here is a link for the testing booklet:http://search.barnesandnoble.com/books/product.aspx?EAN=9781576857410&page=index&prod=univ&choice=allproducts&query=9781576857410&flag=False&r=1&ugrp=1

I want to start a career and serve for at least 20 to 25 years, 30 years you get a pension and 70 or 75% of your pay.

I have the 64 bit version and it looks great but since I game, my settings have been set to performance.

I got rid of the box as soon as I deactivated my wireless connection.

I recieved that box after the blue screen of death; it tried to restart, but I quickly shut my pc down reconfigured my bios, fixed my problem in safe mode,
added passwords, and installed about 65 microsoft security updates.
Eventually I plan to build a system, work from dos and create my op system for geeks like us.

My first time on a pc was back in the early 90's and dos is what we worked with; I was 9 years old back then. Those where the good old days playing Oregon Trail. That was harsh reality as a kid, making it through the trail without having your family members die. Always good to have an extra axle, you can hunt for food.

Mcafee works great; I am still installing norton because I am an SOB when it comes to defending my things.
I have about 4 other networks trying to hack into my system and Macafee blocks them from taking over. Being that it is not my Network, I can not secure it the way I would like, hence extra steps for blocking intruders.

I don't know anything about your box.  But congratulations on joining the Marines.  Say hi to my nephew when you get there.
