Title: Commitments
Post by: Anonymous on January 27, 2004, 09:10:07 AM
I wish to start a disscussion in regards that what kind of efforts everyone wishes to put in in terms of providing content.

There's seven of us. Ideally if we commit to one item per week, we can have daily updates and that's great. However, I know that some of you are not ready to commit for an article once a week and that's fine. I don't think it's critical for the main page to be updated daily at this point. There's just not enough traffic to justify the work. However, as time progresses and as this whole writing initiative becomes successful, we can reevaluate commitments and the need for additional content providers.

Also, how do you feel about being in charge of a specific section? Say we have 5 main sections for example. One person is dedicated to provide content to one section. That doesn't mean you can't write up stuff for other sections or that others can't write stuff in your section. It simply means that when there is a down time, you are responsible for updating your section. A down time could be 2 weeks with no updates for example.

If we do it that way, we are talking about a commiting two content items per month each. The main page would be updated every second day on average. Personally, I'm fine with that. The benefit is that we get variety. t wouldn't always be the same sections being updated. Everything would get updated equally. I'd like to know how you feel about the idea and what you think a reasonable commitment would be for you. There's no pressure here. If you can't commit more than once every two months, that's fine. We just want to get an idea so we can come up with a plan and a publishing schedule.

Also, I wish to thank our new writers for joining us. We are really trying hard to make the geekery a better place. We want to increase the traffic here and get new people in the forums. We hope that a quality front page will get us just that.

I'll take a section and commit to a weekly update, or submit a weekly piece in general. I read the Corinthian Interface thingy, and went over and looked at it -- is that what I should use to submit articles? Or should I email them to someone? Will someone be editing and green-lighting articles? Does my office have a window? Do I have to use the same bathroom as everyone else? What's a good place to eat around here?

Is there a dress code required when working here? Can I chew gum and type at the same time? Why does ivan get a better office than I do? Anyone want to go out for drinks after work?

The coriantyan thingy is what you use for uploading articles. See the sticky thread in this forum. You should use that to upload the article yourself. There is no need to e-mail it to someone, but if you want to e-mail it to someone no one will try to stop you. Someone may edit your article if you screw up the HTML tags and fuck up the main page or something like that. You have green light. There are no guidlines developped currently and I propose there be none unless it becomes critical. we trust you will not be posting pron or something extreemely offensive like the goatse pic on the main page. That would be hilarious, but please don't do it. You don't have an office, thus you don't have a window. If yo use catwritrs bathroom, don't leave the seat up. I wouldn't eat any of the places around here. But I hear some of those places could have some really good food.

As far as I know, we all have Windows. Well, maybe Demo is the only one that doesn't.

I could safely say that I'm with Demo on this one, I can pretty much write one rant a day if I wanted to. I think "Rants" are in.

Because I'm an IRC/AIM whore, I could easily provide at least one highly amusing conversation a week.

Hey, I just noticed that I'm the token female in the group.

Ok, I get it. Instead of instituting an editors board to fix little gaffs made by your beleaguered writers, you will let the articles go live unedited and then just RIDICULE the writers into submission.

Good idea.

Are you sure? How many of us have you met IRL?

And even THEN you sometimes can't tell until the clothes come off.

Wow! I like what I'm reading. And I'm not just talking about the taking off clothes part! I'm glad to see this kind of support from the new crew. I guess I can commit to onne item a week as well.

I propose we make up our minds about how to rearrange the frontpage ASAP. Then we can decide who's responsible for what section and we can get the ball rolling with new content.

With the addition of the new sections, I think I should make the changes needed, such as getting rid of the "Hosted" section, getting rid of the "Bookmark" link and moving some of the other things around. Also, I think I should make some tables on the right hand side of the site which will have the last three or four headlines in there in smaller text as links to the full item. Each box will represent a section of the site. This way whenever one of you posts a new article, it will automatically go in one of those boxes and move the oldest one out.

I'm going to steal lacerda's idea here. You know what he does when he publishes an article? He starts off the article with the following:

Lacerda, News Correspondent.

I like that. And since there's now 7 writers, maybe we should each have our own mini sig to identify us clearly.

I like all these ideas. They go along with the suggestion I posted in the "new categories" thread.

I've been pondering the Geek Girls section. For the most part, it's been kept PG or PG-13, except for a few exceptions. As The Geekery attracts more attention, and especially when New Yorker editors start browsing here to check on the published works listed in our resumes, the Geek Girls section should be kept to a stringent standard. I'd like to see it harnessed for the good of the site, rather than be a free-form post-your-pr0n-links section. It's already heading in that direction, I think. We could push it all the way, and have it be to porn-seekers what HN is to kiddie-hackers. You know? Like no actual porn ever gets linked or posted there. A send-up of the ubiquitous e-zine forum porn section. "20 MB of hot ursine porn".

In regards to the main page and the addition of some stuff, here is what I have come up with thus far: Click for screen shot (http://www.gotthegeek.com/new_gtg.jpg)

I'm probably going to have a day off tomorrow, I'm going to use it to fix the templates up. They have gotten a little "messy" when it comes to the HTML coding, and I would like to make it a little neater and cleaner to see if I can conserve some bandwidth here and there.

After about a good three or four hours of work, and a lot of cursing and screaming at the monitor, I finally got things to work properly with the boxes on the right hand side of the entire site. The only thing left to add is the "Creative Writing" section. Rants are already there, hopefully we can get one ore two more to add as well.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Another idea, instead of calling a section "Creative Writing" or something like that, why not, "Kreative Korner Kids" and see if anyone picks up on it...

In related news, I've had to go back and edit everything I've typed so far today. It's gonna be a great day, I can tell.
