Title: How it's done, Part Two: Modifying mp3's for dummies
Post by: jeee on July 10, 2009, 03:28:09 PM
When modifying MP3 files downloaded from youtube or grabbed from other sources there is mainly two things you want to change, cut out parts like comments and applause and modifying the volume.

How to do that??

Very simple:

Download Direct Cut here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_software/mp3_tools/mp3directcut.cfm (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_software/mp3_tools/mp3directcut.cfm)

Install the program and start it up.

In this case I took Kevin Skinners performance on America's got talent because I secretly love country ....

The start file is the youtube video downloaded and converted as posted earlier.

Click file/open and choose the file.

Then push play and wait for the moment you want your new mp3 to start, click "set begin"

then ffw or wait till the desired end, then click "set end"

You see a part of the file with diagonal stripes, that's your selection:

Then click edit and choose "crop"

Voila, long introduction talk and jury comments are cut off and you have your song.

Volume:

It's very irritating when you listen to a bunch of mp3's and you constantly have to adjust the volume because one is loud and the

other almost complete silence.

It's very easy. We take our file

Choose edit and then "normalize"

The program checks your file and suggest the amount of Db that would make a nice volume level.

Click Ok and you're done.

If you want it to be louder you can play with the "Gain" option.

There are a few other nice features but that is for you to find out. This is just a short how to..

Nice! I have been lazily looking for a MP3 editor so I can craft my own ringtones to put on my Curve. They never seem to work after I edit them. I'll be giving this one a shot.

You can also fix the volume in iTunes, if you have it. Just right-click a song and edit song info, then go to the last tab and you will see a slider for individual song volume. As for cutting things out of the song, you basically have two options: either go somewhere like airmp3.com or thepiratebay.org and find the song from someone who has already cut those bits out, or do like jee said above and download a program to do it yourself. I, personally, prefer Audacity, mostly because I do podcasting with my friends, but most any free audio editing software will allow you to cut audio out. Happy ringtone making! :)

Update: I ran over my Curve. Today I am using the technological marvel that is the Samsung t109. Incidentally, can't upload music.

That sucks that you can't upload music. Maybe if you sent it to yourself from your computer as an attachment? Not sure how that would work. And... how did you manage to *run over* your Curve?

Apparently fell out of the 'ol trousers while getting in the car. Of course, I realized this too late to stop me from running over it in my parking spot as a returned.
