Students subjected to breathalyzer test
« on: September 14, 2014, 04:49:40 PM »

http://www.toledonewsnow.com/story/26522525/football-game-breathalyzer-tests-began-at-perrysburg-hs-friday

I'm trying to decide how I feel about this. On the surface, I think I'm OK with it.

What are your thoughts?

From a science perspective, I'm saying no. Those instruments are not reliable. Innocent kids are gonna get punished, harshly, for this, and because of the random selection aspect, guilty kids are gonna walk. It's not okay.

As a Fuck-You-I-Won't-Do-What-You-Tell-Me type, and a rabble rouser even while I was in high school, I'd have organized a student boycott of football games just on principle, and I would have kept it up until they stopped this foolishness.

And I never once tried going to a HS football game with alcohol on me or ingested.  But I object to this kind of invasion of privacy, particularly if innocent.

EDIT: Also, what Zorg said.  Too many false positives, and this would do absolutely zero to curb or reduce teen drinking.

They already do unannounced k-9 searches of lockers and cars in the parking lot. I think the security theater that they put on to scare kids into compliance is less effective than the "Just Say 'No'" campaign in the 80s.

About as effective as abstinence-only sex education is at keeping kids from boinking.
