Seriously, though... I have no problems with people making personal choices.

The problem is the fact that groups like these almost never seem satisfied with just the personal choice part of it... they always seem too insistent on making that choice for everyone else as well.

I know lots and lots of them. I used to go to meetings with my mom. She's been clean and sober since 1991.

While there are exceptions, the vast majority of 12-steppers I know would like nothing more than to see alcohol wiped out and NOBODY allowed to drink it, whether you have a drinking problem or not.

Know what I mean?

Yes. My dad is a recovering alcoholic. Also, yes, I do see your point. Fixing up your own life is fine and dandy. If you decided to give up drinking, then good for you! Don't expect us to go back to enacting the whole "no booze" part of the Constitution, however. Keep your personal problems\recoveries to yourself and any interested parties. The problem I have is with knee jerk reactions against self-help groups that are based in religion. If the org keeps it cool and on a one-on-one basis, then what's the problem with it? If the founder of AA (or any other group for that matter) comes over to my house, beats my grandma, rapes my dog then tells me that nobody in Amercia can drink anymore, then yeah, I'm going to have a problem with that. But if the group is along the lines of "Hey, you've got problems, we're here to help you make your own decisions on how to deal with it." then I don't see the reason to belittle the group. It's just a pet peeve I have.

Most 12 steppers I know aren't that way. They pretty much remain anonymous and are pretty cool with others drinking. Just like most christians I know keep to themselves about their religion. However I've met 12 steppers and christians, and nuts from other religions bent on converting all others. I usually avoid these people (who fortunately aren't too prevalent around here) and stick with the tolerant people I know from diverse backgrounds. Perhaps it's a middle of the country thing (as opposed to the enlightened coast thing).

Psychologically, ethologically, and common-sensically I would disagree with their premise.
