I have, unfortunatly, a free compaq 4550.  Sounds good, right?

You turn it on, it goes to the Windows Desktop, still good?

It's got the 4 or 5 basic icons (IE, My Comp, Network Neighborhood, My Documents, and Recycle bin), getting bad?

You open My Computer and you get the drive selection, you click on anything and it says "ActiveX Controls Prohibit" or something along those lines.  Utoh?

Can't open the start menu, can't really do anything.  Won't recognize any CD's, any floppies, and now it won't recognize the hard drive either.  Should I keep it as a paper-weight?  Gracias.

Sounds like that thing was a library's computer. Like I always would do when I get a junk computer: reformat, put a new install of an OS on it, and you should be good to go.

But when you say "it doesn't see the hard drive" do you mean it doesn't even boot up?

Boot it up, and it goes to a DOS-esque screen saying "No Operation System Found."   I can't format it, just because there's no way to get it into DOS.  Theories circulating my house are someone hit it with a virus and no one noticed it, which wouldn't surprise me knowing the pople that live here.

Have you tried making a boot disk from your working computer, and then using that boot disk to get into DOS on the other computer? Then you'll be able to format it, and reinstall whatever operating system you'd like. (Providing that the computer can support it)

Heh, tried that too.  Nothing works.  Won't recognize the floppy drive.  I spent 3 days straight trying different ways to fix it.  Turned it into a footstool/paperweight when needed.

Compaq should burn.

You know, they suck, but try an eMachine.  I want to shoot the guy who bought me one.  That's alright, I have a gateway to go back to on Sept 1... I can't wait.

I built my own computer. It's rather nice.

I used to have a Packard Bell back in the day, but go rid of that when I got my own computer. That had an E-Machines motherboard on it. Now I am here with an Epox, and dual Pentium IIIs.

I still have my old 386 sitting around somewhere.  I love that thing.  And my Pentium 75 mhz. Think that can support Unix?

to get back to your problem, go in the bios and change boot sequence to start with the CD rom and save your settings. Since you're there, you might wanna look in here to see if the floppy drive is active. Regardless of floppy situation, put you OS CD in the CDROM and restart your PC (after modifying the boot sequence). I don't know what OS you run so I can't give you more details, but generally, you should be able to install directly that way, or at least gain access to a prompt and reformat in DOS.
