Kerry: "I'm running for president because..."
« on: June 15, 2004, 09:34:53 AM »

You know, in reading that, I didn't see him take advantage of the MAIN reason he should be giving potential voters.

He should drop all that other stuff and say:  "I'm running for president because I'M NOT GEORGE W. BUSH."

That'll take him a lot further than any stand on any issue, I think.

Maybe he should have tried all that at the beginning.

Yeah, his best bet for a campaign platform now is just: "I'm not Bush and I'll probably win."

Admittedly, it would be refreshing to see an "honesty" platform from him in that way.  "Vote for me!  I really AM the lesser of two evils!"

I keep getting the impression that his handlers aren't letting him say a lot of the things he wants to for fear of alienating fencesitters...

I wish they'd just let him already.

I find it a bit disturbing that so many people will vote for somebody just because that person is 'not bush' instead of voting for that person because of where he stands on issues.

As do I.

It's the most glaring example of what is wrong with a political system egregiously dominated by only two parties.

Y'know, I have a lot more respect for a candidate whose positions are clearly-stated and who stands up for something than I do for a candidate with no clear message than, "I'm not the other guy."

I'm not the biggest fan of GWB, but I've seen nothing out of Kerry that indicates that he'd be a better choice.  I know that the popular question is, "how could it get any worse?"  But part of me says that the demon you know is preferable to the demon you don't.

I do wish to make it exceedingly clear that GWB has done everything in his power to lose my vote (which he also didn't have in 2000.)  But Kerry has done nothing to demonstrate that he should get my currently-available vote.  As it stands, I probably will abstain from the presidential race.

Being Canadian I really have fun watching the race down there. It's when The Shrub does shit like http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/06/15/kerry.vatican/index.html that just boggles my mind.

Can't really be too surprised to see this...

Does that mean we can finally see the White House lambasted for misappropriating funds approved by Congress for the "war on terror" that Dubya used to finance the initial invasion of Iraq?

I mean in a legal sense, not just political grandstanding by House Democrats.

And to the rest that are having issue with Kerry's quiet campaign:

I read an article where he said that he really wasn't interested in asserting himself in policy debates until the election gets closer. Basically he said that anything he says now means virtually nothing to anyone but those that will pick it apart without any attempt at context. Closer to the debates, he said he's really gonna let loose with policy thoughts, trying to set the debate tone.

I think it's a smart move.

In this place in time, is there any honest way Democrats could do so without being lambasted for political grandstanding? In this place in time, is there virtually anything Democrats can do or say as the opposition party that won't be lambasted for political grandstanding?

Guilty as charged.

I give a rat's ass who the president is at this point in time, as long as the legislative and executive branches are controlled by opposing forces. Call me what you will.

I think that it's a move by some one who really doesn't have anything to go on other than he's "not the other guy."  He doesn't want to stand up for anything because some one might actually ask him questions.  Wait and see.  Bet you he takes every other past canidate's approach.  Makles lots of statements about what he thinks should happen and what he's for, but not one word on how he actually plans to do something about it.  He's afraid some one will say, "Mr. Kerry?  How do you plan on doing that?"  Then he'll have to do some double talk to get around the fact that it's just something the polls said would help him out.
