What do you use to talk to people, if you do, online? And why?

I use AIM because it's basically what everyone I actually need to talk to uses. Im think of trying ICQ....should I?

ICQ can be quite the annoyance. All the spam IM's and not to mention the spinny guys make me dizzy..

AIM is the best way to go. Yeah AOL sucks, but aim doesnt. Everyone uses it, and the screenames are sometimes easier to remember than oh say 37186279. "Hey what are the icq numbers of your two friends?" the you gotta memorize all these numbers..its so damn complex and my brain can't handle it.

Trillian is pretty cool.  It lets you talk to people on multiple IM platforms.  It can handle AIM, ICQ, Yahoo (I think), and one other one.  It can't do all the stuff that AIM can, but it's pretty cool.

I believe Trillian has made itself look exactly like AIM to the AIM Servers. So if they shut down Trillian, they'll shut down AIM, too.

I don't get what AOL is trying to do. They won't let any other program connect to their stuff, yet they are trying to make a program that will serve as a cross platform for other clients besides AIM.

Why the hell should any other company let AOL do that? AOL didn't let anyone else do it to them, so why should they be able to do it?

Yea, I know... but whenever AOL does something it's always got to be RIGHT!

Wasn't AIM looking to get ALL other IM clients shut down?  I guess they were thinking that "We have the most users, so we're the most important.  Everybody else should just go away so we can force everybody to use our client."

As far as memorizing the user numbers, It's not that hard, only took me a year to memorize mine without needing ICQ open.  26896995.  AIM is so much easier to use, and has a better user base.  I, personally, have never gone up to a friend and said "hey, what's your ICQ?"

I don't like trillian much...Most likely because I talk on IRC all day, and their mIRC-ish client isn't to my liking.  And as for ICQ, it's very insecure.

ICQ and AIM
« Reply #18 on: August 25, 2002, 12:31:20 AM »

Icq sucks, it has to many wanna be hackers with their little icq proggies pretending they are something else, AIM also has the little proggie snaters with their 'rampage tools' and i get pretty sick of them and their "Shut up man b4 i run rampage on your ass" these people make me sick  :x , ahh what does it matter, eh?-

I use AIM to talk to my friends, aim chat rooms are a big waste of time.  All you get in there are weirdos and porn bots.
