Censorship online
« on: July 16, 2002, 02:31:51 AM »

How do you guys feel about censorship online? Personally, I think its the dumbest thing ever. I mean, when AOL bans poems that have one bad word in it, you know the line has been crossed. I can understand if they want to make it harder for little Johnny to go to porn sites or something but I mean poetry, come on, just give it a rest. Have they ever heard of a thing called Freedom of Speech?! If parents don't want their kids reading or looking at that sort of thing, why don't they just monitor what their kids do more closely? Seriously though, isn't there something a little more concerning that our government can be "attending to"? :x

It's not so much a thing of Freedom of Speach, it's just the technology is lacking. If I were to write a poem with some bad words in it, and put it here, the AOL filtering crap would pick it up, and not know the difference between a poem and instructions on how to make an explosive device. It simply looks for key words, compares them to a list, and then blocks out what the user isn't allowed to view.

I have no problem with parents trying to keep their children away from things that could get their children into trouble, or could harm them. That's a good thing, not bad. However, if your ISP starts blocking things that you didn't want blocked (IE: you're the sole user of your computer and internet connection) for no reason what-so-ever, there are going to be some problems there because that does start to infringe upon one's right to Freedom of Speach.

Personally, I have never had any problems with internet filters. I have never looked up anything that would warrant a "slap on the hand" from AOL. In fact, I don't even use AOL as my ISP.

yeah the only real times i've had trouble with it are

  • at skool, they used to have a very tight filtering software installed
  • when connecting through a proxy, sometimes they have their own content filters and so you have to look another up and change your proxy
  • [/list:u]

i know MSIE has a content advisor, parents could enable that ...

thinkin about it, censorship will never be able to filter everything. there are ways around everything. Aol, well AOL is AOL and there for it sucks.

Censorship in general is a problem though, i mean what is wrong with kids seeing porn? look, some day they will be exposed to it, along with drugs, and all other corruptions of society, so why not just get it over with, i say the sooner the better- what does any one get out of restraining someone? the restrained person tries harder and harder, in most ways its futile. any way, im out

I hope you never have kids...

For one, they'll become horribly cynical at an early age.

Restricted access to those "inapropriate" websites is pretty much all bullshit and no reasoning. Porno for "little kiddies" isn't exactly a GOOD thing, but not being able to oh, let's say, go to my lame ass website-which someone deemed "inapropriate"-blows chunks.

The guy who did it had his head up his ass. I pushed it higher.

Quote

that doesn't even apply to teh intarnets, IMHO. a wes bite is privately owned so the owner can do anything he/she wants with it. (within reason)
