well within the next few months im going to build myself a new comp...

well here is what im trying to decide... wether to just go for straight speed and hit the 2.53 p4.. but occasionally i set my comp up as a sever and sumtimes run Red alert two games on it.. i was just wondering should i go for the p4 or possibly go dual on aprox 1.7 p3 or it might be a p4

Dual would be better. It can get more done with less of a struggle than a single processor unit can.

I've got a dual system and I have yet to see it get slowed down one time.

You're looking at over 250 for a dual motherboard that can support P4s. I've got dual PIIIs.

uhm... buying dual p4's is totally pointless... you won't notice the difference.. i'd rather buy an extra 256 of DDRAM or a faster hard drive to lessen the swap burden and virtual memory...

You'd notice the difference if you're running RC5 by the amount of blocks that you put out. Or just the amount of programs that you can have running. Dual P4s would only really be needed for a "bad ass" server that is used to house something like Slashdot. But they wouldn't use Pentium 4s. They'd go for dual Athlon XP 2200s.

its just all depends, when i decide to build it, i know im gonna build it all out, i have already decided on 1 gig of ddr  at least a 128mg video card and prolly at least 100 gig 7200 hd ( im already currently using up 78 gigs on the comp i have now)

i'd rather get a really fast single than two slow ones...

its like buying a huge sports car and driving it around the neighborhood, the roads will only let you go 25mph... it may look nice, and you might get to run it fast a couple times, but really... all the extra power is wasted.

now the servers are like buying a big ass mac truck. they need that power, and they USE it.

find me something better than a 128mg video card...
a gig of ddr is overkill, and will cost too much..
the hard drive sounds good, but if you put emphasis on the 7200 just get a SCSI...5 gigs will do, load windows and stuff on it..

running a gaming server, two games, 1gig is far from overkill...

im running dual mp 1600's... very major difference in speed, for the short time i had xp pro installed...

SCSI not scusi, despite the way people say it...

try www.pricewatch.com

and i doubt he is running a server so he would not need a gig of RAM...
