A+ Certification - How hard could it be?
« on: November 15, 2004, 02:06:14 PM »

So I hand my employer a resume, right - and it shows my job history and that there are places I have worked with a technical flavor, but nothing totally IT. There are also some personal projects listed. So how will they beleive me when it comes to computing? Should I take the A+?

Here are my skills:
Familiar w/ most Windows OS
Familiar w/ most popular windows programs
Can repair, build, maintain, and diagnose computers
Have built 2 computers
Have built and installed 2 LANs
Familiar with most signal cables

I realize that this is not very specific, but I can get specific.

Getting your A+ won't hurt. (Unless you count the test taking fees.) Some places won't even conisder you without some type of standard cert.

I think one of the three, repair tech/field tech(cable/POTS)/tech support rep., would be enjoyable.

Between A+, Network+ and Server+, I found the Server+ test to be the easiest. If you know SCSI types and general diagnostics, you're set. Most of the questions were about SCSI termination issues, speed, and what green\amber\red lights on your server mean.

I think I will go to Borders (the book store) this week and flip through all those fake A+ tests. Microsoft has a special "cram course" that they offer now - looks expensive ($300?) - I don't want to break my bank for something I'm not totally sure about.

(I didn't build those computers from a kit either.)
