notebook is f&$#in up....
« on: July 13, 2005, 09:21:28 PM »

first off it is an emachines m5305 off ebay.  when i first got it, it would shut down or freeze for no good reason.  then i tried restoring it, and it wouldn't finish cause it kept shutting off.  i figured it might be over heatng so i propped it up and pointed a fan under it.  it finished the restore just fine.  now that it has a fresh OS, it still does it but it seems to do it more often.  i looked up an application to check the temp and found speedfan.  since installing it, it shows "temp1" as running at an average of 55C.  but when i looked it up in the configuration area, "temp1"refers to ACPI.  i read up on it some more and all i can conclude is that ACPI is the power management software associated with linux.  APM would be the Windows equivalant.  I am at a loss here.  please help.

Ah, well you see there is obviously a problem in the UDP protocol that is causing an invalid hardware error, sometimes called temp1.

The easiest thing to do is to create a boot disk, from the aptly named bootdisk.com, select the "Windows 98 SE" one.

Then, after booting from the book disk, type fdisk and hit enter.

You should come to a menu, select (I believe) the first option, which should be something like delete partitions.

Partitions are the computer versions of the toliet dam things inside the back, that conserve water. This tries to conserve space.

Delete them.

You won't need to worry about that temp problem for a while after that.

Do not try this at home...

The first part of what I said, UDP, was made up.

The second part would be the prestep to formatting your harddrive.

You might want to consider checking your mobo and such.  If it keeps resetting, temp is just one possible factor, your computer may be seriously messed up hardware wise.

We weren't being redundant.  We were being recursive.

Incidentally, this pic really reminds me of some clients I have to deal with occasionally.
