Lol.

You idiot.  That's not a virus.  A computer virus is something defined as "any program or script which reproduces itself".

Given the symptoms you are describing, and given the source, it is my diagnosis that you in fact ran something known as hmtk.bat.

Trust me, it's not a virus.  It is a batch command file that simply changes the file associations of certain extensions/filetypes to associate instead with your default text file editor, that's all.

And if you run batch code without even bothering to look at it first, then you pretty much did the damage yourself.  Why on earth would you do such a thing to your own computer?  That makes running programs and opening other file types rather difficult, don't you think?  If I were you, I'd change the file associations back to the way they were with the ASSOC function in your command shell.

I'm continuously baffled at how stupid some people are...

*shakes head in disbelief*

You "ain't very good at using a pc", and you don't know how to open a command shell, yet you run unexamined batch commands?

Lol.  Why did you run that program to begin with?

HAHAHA! Alright! I'll try to give you a hand but I need more information.

First, what happens when you first boot and end up in windows.

First, what OS are you running.

Then, what happens if you run an application. Internet Explorer for example.

Third, if you click "My computer" Does that work as it should?

First you must tell me why you ran this.  What were you asking Banshee for to cause him to give this to you?  Tell me first why, and then MAYBE I'll consider helping you, if you can give me any reason why I would help you even then.  Because frankly, if you are stupid enough to have caused this kind of damage to your own computer to begin with,  in all likelihood you probably shouldn't be using one anyway, in which case the best way for me to "help" you would be to advise you to turn the damn thing off and never, EVER use it again.

That, my friend, is a surefire way to remove a complex element of stress from your existence.  Too stupid to use a computer?  Stop using one, end of problem.  Savvy?

OMFG! I'm in tears now!

But Demo, If I remember correctly, Jones boy just showed up and asked how to post pics in threads. Then Banshee told him to download his little file. He just picked on a newbie for no apparent reason. Now to be fair, we should tell him how to fix it. I'm sure he's learned a valuable lesson. (Lessons 1: We are all assholes here. lol!)

Seriously, I don't recall the guy doing anything wrong here, except to listen to banshee. But we really shouldn't treat newbies this way. Sure, we had fun, we all laught, but let's give him a little help.

There's a couple of ways you can fix this:

Use the Assoc command (You better know what the hell you are doing, cause if you cause more problems, you're on your own.):
--------------------
Assoc
Displays or modifies file name extension associations.

assoc [.ext[=[filetype]]]

Parameters

none

Displays the current file associations. To view associations one screen at a time, append the |more command. To redirect the output to a file, append the >filename.ext command.

.ext

Specifies the file name extension for which you would like to view or change the associations.

Type assoc .ext to view the current association for a file name extension.
Type assoc . ext= to delete the association for a file name extension.
filetype

Specifies the file type with which you want Windows 2000 to associate the specified file name extension.
---------------
If you go in windows help and check out the index for "association of files", you'll find something like this. I'm on Win2000 so it may not be available to older O/S. I don't know.

Second method is to do them one by one not using command prompt:
---------
To change the program that opens a file

Open Windows Explorer.
Click the file that you want a different program to open.
On the File menu, click Properties.
Click Change.
Click the name of the program that you want to open the file, or click Other to select a program that is not listed.
 Notes
--------------

And in the future, NEVER download executable files unless you are sure of the source and what it does.

can't you start your computer in DOS mode and run the Assoc command?

Start by typing "assoc|more" (withouth the quotes). This will list all file types on your PC. Then you need to assign each of those file types to a program. Have fun! You're in for a long night.

I wasn't aware of the circumstances.  Typically hmtk and the like are only given to those that really ask for it.  That was rather mean of Banshee to hand it out to someone who was only asking how to post a pic or something.

At the same time, as TheJudge mentioned, you should really take notes here man... don't trust anything or anyone on the web unless you know them well, and even then....

Actually, Judgie, he won't be able to use his command prompt.  It's an .exe, and because EXE's are now associated with txtfile's, it will only open Notepad if he tries to go to Start=>Run=>Cmd.exe, which is precisely what that batch file was supposed to do.  Also, if he's running Windows 2000 or XP, he's going to have one hell of a time booting into "DOS mode", especially since he's a newbie to this whole computer thing.

What he needs to do is open up the original hmtk.bat with notepad (which he shouldn't have any problems running) and edit it to change the filetypes back to their original values, and then run the batch file again.

So where it says "ASSOC .exe=txtfile" he should change it to say "ASSOC .exe=exefile", et cetera with the other filetypes (i.e., "ASSOC .jpg=jpegfile", "ASSOC .com=comfile", and so on).

Thanks for the info Demo, I was just telling him what I though would work. I didn't actually want to run the file and then test it. That wouldn't be very wise now would it? NEVER RUN A FILE FROM BANSHEE!!! EVER!!!! Everyone got that????

Plus, it cause more trouble for us because we have to clean up the mess. Ah... The price to pay to be the nice guy.

OK look, I'm very very sorry you had to live this experience. I'm not to be blamed. I was just putting fuel on the fire, but I never started the fire. But if your computer knowledge is limited, there is little we can do for you. Print a copy of this thread and take your PC to a repair shop. The solution has been identified above. Maybe you have a friend with more brains that could help you? Know anyone that knows what DOS is???
