In case i hadn't mentioned it....
« on: November 25, 2005, 09:12:17 PM »

I can't remember if i posted this anywhere before, but I'm working on getting my CCNA certification, and the test's a real bitch and a half.  i wasn't sure which forum to put this on, but does anyone know any quick, easy relaxation techniques that might keep me from flipping out (again... i've taken the test once already, and failed.... i blanked out, and then freaked out)?  they shove you in this little brightly lit room with those aggravating flourescent(sp?) lights, and it drove me up the wall.  anyone?  Help would be much appreciated.

I've heard of gum chewing, or anything that you can chew (and not risk choking on) helps to relax the body when in a stressful situation. Obviously body parts and other parts from animals are probably excluded from this as well.

gum loses it's flavor in like 15 minutes.... and i'm stuck in that clost for over 2 hours.... maybe they'll let me bring in a pack...

Gum, and do some light reading before it. A newspaper or a Maxim, something unrelated to the test or whatever it is that you are doing.

You could also do some stretching and/or yoga if you are into that.

Sun glasses may help if the flourescents are too bright.

Musical distractions up until the minute you have to enter the chamber.

Then, breathe. Close your eyes and focus on just breathing whenever you need to. Take it one question at a time.

It's no the brightness, it's the sound.... that buzzing that's almost below the level of human audibility, that invasive, constant sound.

Here's an idea.  Stop psyching yourself out.  Quit fixating on the negative experience of last time (lights, noise, freaking out, etc.).  Instead, forget about last time and make yourself belive that you'll do just fine this time.  If you have problems when you get in the room, try some of the things that have been offered here.  The chewing gum is a good idea.  Forget about the flavor, it's the act of chewing that is calming.  When working on the deep breathing, also consciously think about slowing down your heartbeat.  If need be, close your eyes for a few seconds and relax the muscles in your neck and shoulders.  Most importantly, you need to go in there with positivity and confidence, not worrying about last time.

You could always take ear muffs.

But if they're mirrored shades you could alway put cheat notes on the inside.

Like Vesp said, forget about the last time.  Take a deep breath or two and relax.

Thanks much for the advice, all.  Hopefully I'll get this test's ass kicked by the end of the week.

One way that I study for tests is i will put on alot of TAG body spray or some other colone and then study. Because scent is the best sense tied to memory if you where the same colone to the test you will be able to remember easier and not blank out.

Also the scent can help relax you a bit to :)
