OS in Disguise
« on: February 07, 2006, 11:34:17 PM »

I apologize in advance if this is already posted, but I didn't find it.

Is there a way I can disguise/tweak/hack Server 2003 Ent. so that software and websites think it's XP Pro?  I've had to fight and finangle with a crap load of software because it didn't recognize the OS.

I will appreciate help and derogatory comments.

Anyone know just what it is that apps/websites look at to determine your OS and version?  I'm pretty sure they don't look at the cd jewel case, but I could try holding my XP case up to the monitor at the appropriate time.  :-0)

Any number of things. Registry information which you would probably never find all of to change. Deep-seated code within the OS's backbone that you can't reverse engineer to rewrite. Nevermind that you'd have to hack your MBR.

Before you start messing with the registry and MBR, try holding up the jewel case.

Shouldn't this go in the gun control thread?
