The Pasadena Freeway was, I believe, the first freeway in the LA area. I haven't driven it in maybe 15 years, and it may have undergone some renovation in that time, but the thing I remember most about it is that the on- and off-ramps are really short. Merging onto the freeway is more like turning right on a red light. Same with exiting. Since the Pasadena Freeway was built, our ideas of what a freeway should be like has evolved. I commute mostly on freeways that have been either built or renovated in the last 5-10 years. There was also a lot of open space where these roads were built, so the lanes are wide, the shoulders capacious, and the on- and off-ramps are long enough for a 747 to take off of.

All this encourages speeding, something I no longer do. As a reformed motorist painfully cognizant of the cost of insurance and the long-term repurcussions of speeding tickets, I habitually keep to the rightmost lane, my cruise control set boldly and daringly at 1 mph above the local speed limit, which is 65 mph in most cases. Less prudent -- or more late -- motorists whizz by me to the left, but I don't let it bother me, as I happily sup my coffee and listen to NPR. What I don't understand, given the mile-long on-ramps prevalent along my route, is why is there always one bozo who doesn't understand what the on-ramp is for and merges in front of me at 40 miles per hour you GODDAM MORON causing me to slow down, thus wasting gas and brakepads, only to speed up after a minute and zoom away at 85 mph?

Sheesh!

State laws must be different here.  On a limited access road, freeway/interstate, you are more of less allowed 14 mph over before there are any points added  to your license.  In other words it is payable up to that point and nothing is reported to the insurance company.

Personally I usually run about nine or ten over the speed limit on roads like this and have never been pulled over for going that speed.  Unless they are new or an eager beaver the police usually want to cause you as much grief as they can if they are going to bother pulling you over.  :-D

It is. It's more like an aqueduct than a freeway. And there is no way anyone can merge in at anything approaching speed limit, unless they have some kind of jet assisted engines. But there is NO excuse for anyone merging onto a regular freeway at 30 mph off a quarter-mile on-ramp! I could get up to speed on a friken bicycle.

In California, it also depends on who is pulling you over. Depending on whether it's local police, county Sherrif or the CHP, and depending on which city or unincorporated county area it is, you might or might not be required to appear before a judge, pay a fine structured in one of a variety of creative ways, be required to attend traffic school, or merely mail in a check. You never know. And of course I've seen officers completely ignore BMWs zipping by at 80 mph but pull over a beat-up Pinto because it looked suspicious. So there's no telling. One speeding ticket I got was for travelling no more than 15 mph above the limit on a deserted stretch of road. This was quite a few years ago. The officer was very nice at first, but things got a bit chilly after I handed him my licence. Turns out, it had expired months before. Ah, the recklessness of youth!

A rule of thumb I've heard is 5 miles above or below the speed limit is alright, everything else is an increasing risk.

Of course, while I have a license I refuse to drive. I walk or take public transportation, occasionally getting a ride, because people are SCARY here with driving.

I live in an agricultural area, and if you don't like it when someone who is going thirty-five mph, then you'd be really pissed when a friggin tractor merges in front of you (or at most three cars ahead of you, this happened almost every day on my way to school last fall.

No, you don't get it. What pisses me off is when people inconsiderately slow down traffic for no good reason. Tractors can't go 65 mph, so I don't expect them to, and I don't get mad when I have to go around them. But jerkwads in their Escalades who are too busy gossipping on their fricken cell phones to bother to get up to speed on the quarter-mile on-ramp provided for just that purpose PISS ME OFF! It's not the speed of the vehicle, it's the inconsideration of the driver that gets me.

Yes I understand that, but there are other roads that go to the same place that this tractor exits on that hardly anyone uses, so I also found the driver in question inconsiderate.

I work in Dinwiddie County.  I know all about tractors being in front of you on a small road.

How did he get canned.  I thoiught Judgie said you had to subtract the minuses from the pluses.

But anyway, I've always thought a woman on a tractor was sexy.
