1408
« on: August 31, 2006, 05:27:04 PM »

I ran across this today while looking for some other Stephen King movie.

That story scared the hell out of me.  I hope the movie doesn't end up sucking.

Anyone else read "1408" from his "Everything's Eventual" book?

Damn, nope. I think that Everything's Eventual and Night Shift are about the last King books I have left to read.

"Night Shift" has more stories in it that wowed me, but "1408" from "Everything's Eventual" creeped me out more than any of his other short fiction.

I'm still annoyed that I don't get TNT so I didn't get to watch Nightmares and Dreamscapes, which I have read and wanted to see.

Too bad... it was pretty good.  Far better than I had expected from made-for-TV, which is by and large crap.

Well I liked The Stand (liked it so much that I kept the DVD for around 6 months), but it really did have the best material to work with. Now It on the other hand, I laughed my ass off at (although I did see it in 2003). I think it really does depend on a lot of factors whether made for TV sucks or not.

I read Everything's Eventual but don't remember that particular story. I do remember the one about the waiter, though. Which, yike.

I want to see Dolan's Cadillac, the one with the teeth, and the one with the finger in the drain from Nightmares and Dreamscapes.

I read it, one of his better short stories. And I agree it was pretty scary. Most of the time I find the movies made from King's books "ok". Besides The Shawshank Redemption that is. That was a really good movie.

I would really like to see a movie made from "Marathon". That is one of my favourite King books and also good movie material.

I have and I loved it! Actually, just finished the whole book about two weeks ago. I've always like the whole 'haunted hotel' thing. Of course I LOVE The Shining.

I'm majorly looking forward to the Gunslinger graphic novel adaptation.

I don't know what it is about haunted hotel fiction, but King just does that really well.  "1408" has about the same qualities about it that make "The Shining" a masterpiece of horror, and I can't put my finger on what, exactly, that is.  They're very different pieces, but the way he describes things in both pieces makes me just shudder.

And some of the random crazy shit in "1408" just makes me want to sleep with the lights on.  I mean seriously... what the hell was that all about with the voice of the room on the phone?

"Six!  This is SIX!  Nine!  This is NINE!  All your friends are dead!  Five!  Goddamn fucking FIVE!"

That's probably what freaked me out the most. I'm used to the whole 'paintings changing when you're not looking' thing, but the phone thing did it for me.

I think that's ultimately what sealed it for me, too.  That part was just downright disturbing, and the worst thing is, I can't even really figure out why that's disturbing!   :x

Because it's so unreal. What is the meaning behind the numbers? Who's the guy shouting it out on the other side of the phone? It makes no sense whatsoever and that's why is so disturbing.

Half the n00bs on HN during my tenure as moderator there didn't make any sense either, but I didn't find them disturbing.

But I know what you meant.  ;)

Another one of his that wasn't horror, but was awesome, was The Green Mile.  I love love love that movie.  It's really difficult to make me cry, but I sob like a baby at the end of The Green Mile.

And I agree with those of you who said The Shining is great.  The movie rocks...Jack Nicholson just totally nails the character of Jack Torrance.  BUT, as with almost all adaptations, the book is just that much better.

If 1408 is in the same vein as The Shining, I might have to check it out.

On a different note, someone earlier mentioned that IT (the movie) was laughable.  Couldn't agree more.  The book was really good though.  If you haven't read it, don't base judgement of it on the movie.  It's longer than hell, but well worth the time.

I suppose it's partly my fault for being so young and accustomed to f/x as I am (not that I'm a snob; Army of Darkness kicks ass) but a lot of IT just made me laugh til my sides hurt. I think that a lot of those old movies should have just waited until the tech came along to make the effects legitimately scary the way they were written.
