Once again, I'm seriously not trying to be the asshole in the room, but I'm gonna end up sounding like the asshole in the room anyway. Is anyone actually surprised that he's dead? This is a man who has a wife and child and still insists on courting death regularly. For christ's sake, he dangled his baby over an unrestrained crocodile. Why is everyone so surprised that he died?

Well he was crazy and his act with the crocodile was indeed irresponsible, still it is sad. He leaves two kids behind, that's always a shame.

It is the third deadly attack of a stingray in Australian history. To die that way when your humping crocodiles on a daily base is ironic.

Not surprised at all; but I can remember not so long ago when there weren't any "animal people" except Marvin and Marty on Wild Kingdom ; sponsored by (ironically enough) Mutual of Omaha insurance. There was no Animal Planet, no Kratt Brothers, no Crocodile hunter... nothing. If nothing else (putting aside his bringing wildlife to you in your easy chair) he re-invigorated people's interest in what the other creatures on this earth are up to. And what a fascinating bunch they are. I sincerely appreciate what he's accomplished soley on TV - not to even mention the Zoo, and other animal welfare projects he was involved in. He did a lot of good in this shitty world; mostly for the ones who can't do it themselves, like the animals...ya know they have no thumbs...
He is one 'celebrity' that I'll actually miss.

As far as the Kid and The Croc; I have a hard time hearing that from the same people who know NOTHING about vehicles, yet load their kids up in an SUV every day; usually two or three times at least; and take them out on the roads. Not saying anyone in here does that; I'm just saying let's keep things in perspective. I don't know what you do for a living, but I'm willing to bet you know it a hell of a lot better and in depth that someone watching you on the evening news. I do know what Steve Irwin did for a living, and I'm willing to bet - guess what? That he knows Weird Tingly Feeling he's doing a whole hell of a lot better and in-depth than any of us. Hell; if he was anything like me, he probably trusted the croc around his baby more than the gaggle of total strangers watching him.

edit - Plus, it's sad that after all he accomplished; that's the only thing anybody remembers specifically. Thanks, media.

I think everyone knew the guy would eventually die, but it's just the way he died that's ironic. I mean seriously, it's a story with irony to rival Rasputin's death.

Sucks, but it was the danger of his job. And Evonus, it's only ironic if he would've escaped work-related death several times over and then got in a car accident in his hometown.

I don't know. Gators are much more dangerous than stingrays. There have only been 3 stingray fatalities in the history of Australia him included. It's just odd that he was around them every day, but then gets killed by an animal not half as dangerous.

@ Vepertine...I'm not surprised that he died, but I am sad...and disappointed. I always imagined him dying in some bad-ass way, like slipping in a mudpit and getting his head bitten off by a crocodile. I mean, a stingray? I thought they couldn't really even kill people...

Agreed. A reptile would have been expected but a stingray? No one expects the stingray.

I think he was branching out, looking for new adventures. He's an expert with reptiles, perhaps he was moving on to fish and such.

In any event, he'll definately be missed by a lot of people, myself and some of the people on the forum included.
