The 'Let's Bitch About Our Jobs' thread.
« on: March 02, 2007, 03:46:02 PM »

ITT we post rants about anything and everything work-related.

Fuck Trendmicro. Their shitty Officescan software is a poorly written piece of monkey shit that can't manage tmp files to save its life. Average tmp file size is supposed to be ~800kb. The fucking thing shat out a 5GB tmp file, then two minutes later another 4.5GB tmp file. Looking through the disk, I realize that it's just not an option for it to, you know, actually delete tmp files on its own after it's done with them. Oh no. That would be too easy. We'll keep writing new ones every few minutes until the disk fills and the server crashes. Time for me to go in and manually start deleting things. That's when I got this delightful message:

Wait, what? I want to delete the files to free up disk space, but you're telling me you can't delete them because the disk is full and you reccomend deleting files.

My head asplode.

That's one of my favourite Windows-isms.  "I can't delete files.  There isn't enough disk space to do that."

One of my other favorites is "cannot delete: directory not empty".

I KNOW that directory isn't empty!  THAT'S WHY I'M TRYING TO DELETE THE FUCKING THING!   :x

And another is not allowing an Administrator level user to delete or access something.

Xolik, I know you don't always appreciate my "Linux is better than Windows because..." rants, but this is one thing that, philosophically anyway, Linux gets right and Windows irks me about to no end.

At work I manage many many Windows Server 2003 terminal servers.  I am a domain admin on all of our domains.

On a regular basis I will try to go into a user's roaming profile directory (like to copy in a config file for some 3rd party software, or to troubleshoot a problem) and be told "Access is denied".

Access.  For a domain admin.  To a folder on a server in that domain.  DENIED.

That does not compute.  It totally makes NO FUCKING SENSE.

On a regular basis this happens, at random, and I have to kick that user off the server, take OWNERSHIP of that directory, and then manually re-assign folder permissions and ownership to the user (and the Domain Admins group, so that I can still access it afterward), just so I can get into it.

In the Linux world, if you are root, there is no such thing as "access is denied".  Period.  I never have to take ownership of a folder just to see its contents.  I never have to reboot a box just to delete a directory or a file.

Philosophically speaking, that is a fundamental flaw in Windows, and it drives me fricking nuts.  Administrator is god.  But not on a Windows box.

It totally makes NO FUCKING SENSE.

That's just Windows all over.

Been doing a "Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Desktop Operating System" class in my college course.  It boils down to Microsoft tech support.  Users, groups and permissions is the biggest headache I've ever experienced.  The lecturer (Who's MS Certified) even had trouble explaining most of it.

For being the industry standard, Windows realy needs to be scrapped and re-written from scratch, there's only so long you can duct tape new things on to an old product before it starts falling appart.  (Never used Vista though, so I can't comment on that)

Demo, I totally agree with you on this one. Root access kicks ass. For Domain Admins to get an Access Denied error that means the user was either smart\dangeous enough to figure out how to remove group memberships from their folders. Screw that. I don't mind 'Unix is better than Windows because of...' type of responses, honestly. What I hate are the "LOLZ INSTALL UNIX PROBLEM SOLVED M$ SUCKS LOLOLO" as a response to ANY Windows related issue. This actually is crap I read on some tech forums I visit and it bugs the shit out of me.

I agree. I have had that same problem with permissions happen to me on several occasions, and it doesn't make any sense. It's really a pain in the ass to have to change the ownership, too. Especially if it's on a bunch of directories with a lot of crap in them.

From what I've heard, they've embedded some widgets and made the windows semi-transparent.

Revolutionary stuff from the offices of Microsoft, right there! =P

*nods*

The absolute BEST is when I need to take ownership of a folder JUST SO I CAN GET INTO IT (  :x ), do what I need to do, and then give ownership back to the user to whom this roaming profile belongs, and re-assign the permissions on it that I hosed up by taking ownership.... only to find that they REFUSE to propagate to subfolders and files.

I have -- and I shit you not -- had to manually re-assign folder permissions on subfolders one at a time at times, even though inheritance is turned on, and even though "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" is fricking CHECKED in the "advanced security settings" for the top-level folder.

What's funny is that most of the time that works just fine and I don't have to do that.  But sometimes it doesn't.

I'm just convinced that filesystem security, permissions, and ownership are all broken in Windows.  Linux isn't perfect for everything.  But ferfucksake, it can at least handle simple things like that elegantly and reliably.

I just tell people "yeah, I'll do that for you. But right now, I'm can't. I am overwelmed with other priorities, but I'll get to you thing. It's on my to do list".

When it wasn't really important to begin with, they forget about it. When it was important, then they get back to me a few weeks later and that's my cue to strat thinking about doing it. V would totally hate me.  :-D

In the biz we call this 'pulling a Scotty'.

Update: I checked wikipedia for an exact quote and discovered that this actually isn't something I pulled from my ass (I promise I didn't write the article).

I've probably blown off hundreds of assignments this way.  It's nice having a boss with a short memory who doesn't write things down.

The thing is...this wasn't an assignment or a deliverable.  This was to inform me of the outcome of the interview (internal job move) that I had with them.  AND I'M STILL PISSED!!!  AND I STILL HAVEN'T HEARD FROM THEM!!!!

Well that's just plain rude.  Work that will never amount to anything can be put off indefinitely, but screwing with someone's livelihood is just plain wrong.
