My new toys...
« on: May 28, 2007, 10:10:13 PM »

This is part one. There is probably another three additions that I will make to this thread within the next week or so.

Just yesterday, there were some thunderstoms that rolled into the area, and knocked out power three times in just under an hour. I got fed up with the situation and decided to start looking around on eBay for UPS units.

Sure, this was a great idea. They're cheap there, but the only downside is that the units weigh on average of about 50 pounds, if not more, for what I was looking for. Shipping something that heavy isn't cheap. Not to mention people have a tendancy to overcharge you on shipping in order to make a few extra bucks.

I got the bright idea to contact the guy that I got my HP rack from several years ago. Sure enough, he had some UPS units in stock that I could buy from him.

How much you ask. $100 a piece. 100 a piece for these guys:

And another 40 for this 4 port KVM:

Here's a shot of the current rack, minus the KVM. I have yet to figure out how to mount it, given the rails are different on my rack.

My work just tossed out several of those KVMs since we changed over to IP based ones. I tried my damndest to just let them give them to me, but they're all "No, no, we have to destroy them. Inventory regulation, you know how the rules go." Bastards.

Can you say "Here, let ME drop them off by the dumpster for you..."?

The hospital I used to work at does the same thing. An even worse aspect is maintaining their 'capital budget'- the funds they use for "new" projects. If they don't spend it all this year; they don't getas much (departmentally) next year. So we were constantly rebuilding brand spanking new Nurse's Stations, Doctor's lounges, etc - only to tear it back out in a few months and throw everything away. Light fixtures, pcs, desks, chairs, the entire nurse's stations (counters, cabinetry, file cabinets, etc) everything went into the big dumpster out back. If you were seen fishing anything out to keep; you were fired on the spot.

How is that irony? I worked there from 1994- 1998.  That would be Clinton.

I snagged this guy on eBay for $150. It's an older 1U Compaq Proliant that has two P3 1.2ghz processors, 512 megs of ram, and 2 18.2 gig SCSI hard drives. I slapped IP Cop on it. My first choice was to use Smoothwall, but unfortunately Smoothwall doesn't have native SCSI support, and I did not feel like re-compiling a kernel for it to work properly.
