Trapster

Taking a page from social networking sites and adding a cell phone to the mix, Trapster, a new Internet-based service, will inform you in real time of upcoming speed traps.
The service, which is free, relies on the community to report police traps, whether it’s a police car with a laser gun, a red light camera, or an officer hiding out of a motorist's view.
Users can post the traps either online at Trapster.com, via a downloadable application on their cell phone or through a 1-800 number. If your phone is GPS enabled, it will automatically tell you via voice alert if you are approaching a police trap. If you don’t have a GPS-enabled phone you will get text message alerts of traps in your area.

Sweet.  8-) I may have to participate.

That's a nice concept and good usage of today's technology. Though I wonder if the police are going to consider it unlawful much like flashing your high beams at an approaching car to alert them of an upcoming speed trap.

Most of them said no; anything that gets vehicles to slow down suits them.

Or you could just, you know, drive the speed limit. And if you want to go faster, take it like a man if you get caught speeding.

That came off kinda assholish, but the idea still stands.

That's a good idea, something I could definitely get behind.

I don't see anything wrong with giving motorists a heads up.

I love the idea.

It seems like a step in the direction of the car networking system that car engineers and designers are working towards. Essentially, your car, and you, will be able to communicate with other cars on the road say at an intersection or just while driving. The ideas of what may be possible include sharing music, movies, directions, opinions, ideas, uh . . . pictures . . .
 . . .

Now that I think about it maybe the idea should be thought out a bit more. Here's hoping I don't ever see "car dating".

Isn't that where the hybrids came from?

The local radio stations around here let you know when and where they are running speed traps.  Not to say the solitary officer may not get you elsewhere but I think it's like 12 says.  Anything to get people to slow down works for them.

How do they enforce that?

Usually a second one sees you. They pretty much know where each other are, and if one sees you flash your lights; chances are it gets enforced then. It's pretty hard to come up with a believable reason for flashing your lights to oncoming traffic just past a waiting patrol car...
Sometimes in some small towns, they even set it up; and will stop you if you pass an officer who has someone stopped, and you don't change lanes. Yep.
