DAMNED IE Error
« on: January 29, 2003, 04:49:53 PM »

i'm using IE 6.0, and it seems like 90% of the time i try to open it, i get the "this program has performed an illegal operation" error..sometimes it'll let me keep going, but most, it deletes all open IE windows..Also, if i click a hyperlink and it opens a new window, that window is transparent., except for the toolbar....any ideas on what's wrong or how to fix?

There are so many things that can potentially cause that that it's not really worth even trying to list them.

Have you tried using a different browser?

just download the service pack 1. I had the same issues with opening new windows. Since I installed SP1, it works fine.

Is there a way, and do you think it's worth it, to completely uninstall, then reinstall Internet Explorer?

Hmm... looks like Opera is sounding like a good choice for you now.

I don't think you can completly uninstall Internet Explorer. I remember Demo saying that he tried it, but he could still use the "Windows Update" feature on the start menu to update stuff via Internet Explorer. Apparently even if you do manage to uninstall it, it's still there.

There is a util out there that you can use to completely eliminate IE from a Windows installation, but I've never used it.

It's called Windows Lite or something like that.

apparently i already have the Service pack. So i'm assuming that doesn't work. I'll try to uninstall it, and reinstall, but i'd rather hold off on the opera thing as a last resort.

Why?  Opera won't screw anything else up, as far as I know.... it's just another option.

Heck, I have four browsers installed on my primary PC at home, and I use different ones, depending on what I'm doing.

For instance, for some reason that I still cannot figure out, HN loads really slow for me at home in IE, as well as in CB, but in Opera, it loads just fine.

However, some webpages simply don't render correctly using Opera, so when in doubt, I try them in IE or in Mozilla.

Mozilla, while it renders things sometimes better than Opera (though sometimes worse), tends to be really slow across the board, so at times it's not one I want to use.

Browsers don't replace each other, dude.  To me, it's as normal to have multiple browsers as it is to have different pieces of silverware.  You don't eat every single type of food with a spoon, do you?  Some things work better with a fork, sometimes you need a butter knife, at times a steak knife, and heck, sometimes a spork works out the best, in spite of its limitations.

Similarly, if you were going to build something out of wood, say a cabinet, how far would you get with it if the only tool you possessed was a hand saw?

I mean, you could do it... you could cut the pieces to the correct size and shape with the saw pretty well... but when it came to pounding in nails with the handle of the saw, it would probably go pretty slow and it would be pretty frustrating.  Even worse if you had decided to use screws instead of nails.  And I'd hate to see how you'd manage to paint or stain the finished product if the only tool you had was that same saw....

Know what I mean?  A browser is just a tool... and it's usually good to have as many varieties of tools as possible, to allow the greatest latitude.
