Dual, Dual, DUAL!
« on: May 01, 2003, 09:05:36 PM »

After about a week of waiting, I've finally got my brand new dual system up and running. Thanks to my brother for pointing out that I had one of the heatsinks on wrong which prevented it from booting up properly, it's now up and running fairly well.

To be honest, installation of the rather large MSI K7D Master L motheboard with two AMD Athlon XP 2000s @ 1.67 ghz each was not as hard as I thought it would be. I thought that it was going to be a pain in the ass to squeeze this huge board into a rather small case, but I was proven wrong. The layout of the board is also pretty good, just like most reviews have said.

The only real bad part about it is the amount of heat that the damn thing puts off. When sleeping with the door closed, the room can heat up to 93 degrees and the case itself getting up to about 120 degrees.

In the end, however, the money spent for this system was well worth it. I have yet to see the system just "slow down" due to it being bogged down with too much crap. It has frozen before, but I think it might have to do with something with the hard drives because when it did so, I was download a huge backup file at the time. If you're looking for a kick ass system, and not afraid to spend some cash, this type of setup is for you.

Here's some pictures that I took of the new crap:

get some better fans, or possibly a different type of cooling system, if it gets that hot. that, and put it in a bigger room.  93 degrees.... whew.

If you don't care too much about case looks, you could always cut a hole on top and stick a huge fan to simulate what this case does:

The system is used as my main workstation. It also cracks blocks while idle for RC5, so it really has a good chance for finding the right code within the shortest amount of time.

It's named Domitius on the network.

Quote
Domitius: The Roman god who kept a woman in the house of her husband.

I thought the name was cool about a year and a half ago when I chose the name for that place on the network and haven't changed it since.

I have plans to get another dual XP system running for the network's terminal server (Named 'Mercury', the God of trade and profit)  within the next week or so. It should be the same motherboard, the only difference will be the processors. They will be XP 1700s instead of 2000s.

If I ever get a good internet connecton that allows me to host websites and whatnot, my dual Pentium III system will be a good candidate for the dedicated web server. It's a very stable machine, even better than my main workstation.

Sounds terrific.

You do know that Mercury was a hermaphrodite, yes?  Even so...

Not too sure I'd classify myself as a "Bishop", but nevertheless, I'm wondering what a "Bish" is. Maybe he censored himself.

Could be short for bisho, which is short for bishounen.
Haha, DarkShade is a bishounen. Now a bunch of perverted Japanese schoolgirls are gonna write stories and draw pictures of him and HeavyJay doing any manner of things that would make a normal human being gouge his or her eyes out. Just remember, rule #1 of bishounen slash: No matter who's manlier, tall one's always on top.... Just lettin ya prepare....

Dual TyanTiger MPX problems
« Reply #23 on: June 11, 2003, 06:46:32 PM »

Ok, I'm still a lamer...but hey, give me a chance....

For cooling, I have the answer. Go to Wallmart. They have these little red fridges that fit a radiator in a home made tank almost perfectly for like $40-$50. Then hit dangerden or whatever and go water cooled. They have rigs for DUAL systems now I think...if I am not explaining myself well (which I do alot) tell me...you're smart, you got YOUR machine running.

Now mine...

I have a Tyan TigerMPX board, 2700 512 memory stick (I think this is the problem), and a AMD MP 2100 proc. I spent lots of time on jumpers, connectors, I have a 400 watt ps, I grounded myself with a mat and strap. Eventually I took everything off the board but the memory and cpu and fans....I get no system beep at all....then fans twitch...then nothing...over and over and over. I reset CMOS and took the itty bitty battery out. I think the system doesn't like the memory and I'm toying with throwing in a 2100 stick. Gah...I've been working on this for a long time and I'm going numb from it. Heck, I even tore the power switch out of the case and swapped it with a simple toggle switch to make sure it wasn't pooped.

Grrrrr!

When you turn it on, the fans only move a little, and then stop? It maybe the motherboard, I'm not sure.

I had a problem like that before with my Dual Pentium III machine and after I bought a 430 watt power supply it still did that same thing. I removed the plugs from the motherboard once, put them back in, and turned it on again and it worked. I have no idea what the hell I did to have that happen.
