GAY Windows Error of the Day!
« on: December 05, 2002, 06:04:26 PM »

I started up my machine around 12 today for the first time, and just after the manufactuerer screen, I get the pleasent DOS message "Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your system."

After about 4 restarts (with different "modes") and a few cold boots I just gave up and came back in a few hours, put in the WinRecovery CD, and skipped it. Then Windows proceeded to load normally. Now, everything works peachily. Weird Tingly Feeling happened?

I've had that very thing happen for a couple of reasons...  but they were hardware related if I recall.  (member when the amd k6-300 came out?  Yeah windows didn't like that too much, until amd released a patch for it)  What else, bad memory caused that for me as well... (amongst other random reboots).  But I never fixed it with and insertion of the Recovery Disk.  That's new.  Maybe on shutdown one of the system dll's got borked up, and the recov disk overwrote it and fixed it (or something similar?) just a guess...

That was the first thing I thought.  I built about 30 PCs for a plantwide upgrade and all of them were AMD K62 procs and I went through that error on every one of them until I applied the patch.

In a related note, if y'all have about 20 minutes, this is some good reading.

Yeah, DSM, AMD set us up on that release, no?  I couldn't remember if it was the 300 or 350.  Weeehoo thems was fast machines.

I think I have to put on my FUD-filter goggles for that link.  Though I'm sure there is prolly much truth in there.  Right now all I can see are freakin beans and taglibs.  My brain needs a good dousing w/beer.

Gonna have to build a new beer-fetching bot. :)

I had that error a few months ago. I forgot what was the cause or resolution, but I remember it was pretty simple. Maybe this can help. If that doesn't help I can only direct you here.

I'm not sure if it was Windows or just Excel, but last night I learned my lesson about not saving every 30 seconds.

I spent about 45 minutes making a spreadsheet at home (a HackMaster GM's campaign log form to use in the campaign I'm running), with lots of fields, lots of intricate column and row resizing (in order to get everything to fit), and BAM.

"Excel.exe has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down, primarily because you haven't saved in the last 30 minutes and you've done lots of work that will be difficult if not impossible to recreate.  You idiot."

Okay, well the message wasn't EXACTLY that condescending, but it still pissed me off to NO end.

I had to more or less start from scratch on it again.  And I never did really get it back to the way I had it.... grrrrrrrrrrr......

You know, there is an option you can turn on in the Office products that will restore the last documents you were in when something like this happens. Or when the power goes out, or whatever cause your application to suddendly close off. It's weird that they don't have that turned on by default.

I believe there is also a 'auto save' feature.  Well at least in MS Word, you'd think it'd be in most programs like that, but im not sure.

Not in Excel there ain't.  You just have to remember to save every few seconds in case the weak-ass program gimps out on you.

This is precisely why I have no sympathy or regret about using/proliferating/condoning h4x0r3d Windows CDs.

Yep ctrl-S is your friend.  Especially a couple of years ago when we were having those power outages.

Ok, I'll share.
I made a cross over cable to network two computers together. One had Xp and one had 98SE.
I know that all of the protocols needed are in order and added.
Yet, when I restarted the 98SE with the my chosen Ip address a black screen comes up saying how I don't have 3 or four networking files and that Microsoft networking is no longer available...blah..blah blah. Press enter to continue. (Reminded me of “Game over. Press start to continue”)
But I do have those files. And it did this 5 times and then all of the sudden stopped.
