Title: Secuirty Cameras on Big Rigs?
Post by: mattj on October 11, 2004, 04:15:12 PM
Hey whats up guys? this is my first post and i need a little bit of geek knowledge. A customer came into my store and was asking about setting up a 6 camera system in a Big Rig Truck. He wanted, Two cameras on the hood, three on the back of the trailer, and one on the windshield. Now, he needs it to constantly refresh on his computer. Space is a minimal. He also wants it to stream on to a website so that his family can watch him do his thing at work. I just need some of you're opinions on how we should go about doing this. Any ideas will be awesome. Thanks!

You'll get nothing from us till you go introduce yourself in the Newbie forum.

Also, it's not nice to ask questions and then disappear once you get your answer. I have a feeling that's how this'll go.

How you tried using computers?

This is easy.  All you have to do is use a camcorder to record yourself from a bunch of different angles checking your mirrors and picking your nose.  Then, loop it over and over.

Seriously mattj, what you are asking to do with that laptop is like trying to cut down a skyscraper with a weed trimmer. Tis' not going to happen.

Sure it is, just not feasible.  I know a guy that runs a live webcam from his motorhome when he goes on trips.  But mind you he's filthy ritch and has wireless access where he travels.

Go to a local university and find the Electrical Engineering Technology college.  The guys in there are always looking for senior projects, and something like this would probably suit some one pretty well.  You'll likely get it for cost, or even be able to talk them into a fraction of that.

If nothing else, it's the kind of things we used to do in our spare time, so I wouldn't be supprised if one of them would draw something up for you on the fly.  It would be up to you to put it together in that case, however.

The part you'll have trouble with is getting it to a website, but they'll give you options, if there are any that might work.  This'll most likely be the most expensive part.

That's one cam not FIVE. Also try streaming 5 cams with a 100K wireless PCS card(even in the Seatown metro area lucky to get 60k reliably). Uh, no. 320x200 @ 100K looks like S#1t. Now make that 5 times 5H1tT3r.

lol  I didn't answer his question.  I just told him that he'd have better luck elsewhere.

I'm not really helping him, so much as I'm helping a fellow engineer by giveing them a decent Senior Project that'll save them some money.  It costs alot to by all the crap for whatever you decide to do, and this way they'll save a few bucks, plus have something to go on for design.

btw, "mattj," if that IS your real name, you really should read the rules of the forum before posting.  Had you done so, I'm betting you would have found your answer, rather than being told to seek it somewhere else.  The only reason I gave you what I did is because I remember how hard it was to come up with an idea and then pay for it.

He's going to have to down size :P
I found out they weren't streaming cameras (I thought they were), they just snap a picture every 30 seconds or so.

I could use something like this, either on my race car or tow rig...

Currently i'm in process of making a laptop mount for both vehicles. where i can take an have a laptop pluged into power and wifi while i'm at home.
I have extended my wifi around the house probably for about 200 yards  and use it regularly.

I was thinking of getting multiple USB cameras, small one's , and getting a USB hub and running multiple instances of video recording software and record each stream during a course of the event.  one  camera up front, one on the side, one camera viewing back.

Or get analog cameras with automatic video switcher on timer with only one output to the laptop where it would conver it from analog to digital and display it on the screen.

any other ideas?

Hmmmm many cameras on a "big rig" ........    I didn't see all of your website, so I don't know what kind of store you have (although I like the picture of the Eclipse on the city roof-top) and um what kind of store do you have? These cameras would need intense weather-profing, don't you think? Do you have any business partners you can hand this guy off to?

i dont' have a store? what are you talking about?

extreme weatherproofing?  hmm, nothing a glue gun and a little bit of plexy can't fix,  i have made few things like this.  just get 4 1cm by 1cm squares
get 8 peaces of clear plexy identical size. one of the plexy is cut so you can pull the source feed cable thru..

easiest way of weatherproofing..

A glue gun ---- you mean epoxy or something, right? You're method is probably right. I always think "weather" because of all the corrosion i've seen on outdoor devices.

yes,  some type of glue/epoxy or whatever you can trust to keep it together in your climate, about the only thing i would trust here in MN would be welding thats painted in 2 or 3 layers of paint and then wraped in vinyl.

Turn off safe search and do a GIS for "wrapped in vinyl" at work.

I have found a few small analog cameras for this purpose, The reason why i  think analog camera for this purpose would be great is due to its refresh rate, and you can then controll on the PC how many FPS you want to capture at.

I will post the model number when i get home tonight..

We point out the fact that you don't need to sign your posts, how it's repetitive, boring, time consuming, and annoying, yet you persist?

Why, dear God? Tell me why!

Even if you have weatherproofed cameras and video capture cards and a laptop plugged into your cigarette lighter, how, pray tell, will you reliably upload the images to a web server?

Also, don't tell me how to do my job. kthx.

i personally would not care for uploading on the intraweb.

my purpose would be for recording the video to watch during races on closed courses so that i can see where i need to improve and what needs to change.

and on the towing i could see easier when i back up and during driving i coud ocasionally see the cars on the trailer to make sure everything is still tight etc.

swiss cheze here only, american cheeze is kind of plain and stinky..

The guy has a sense of humor. HN may just work.

But unless this thread starts to go somewhere productive, it's going to get locked.

Enes didn't really get a chance at tehgeekery(OMFGLOL!!11). How about giving him some slack for a change?

There is no reason for this to go on any longer. I don't see what the big deal of him putting "-E" after every post that he makes. It's just the same as him putting it in his signature.

If anyone would like to contribute to this thread, please make a new thread in the Technology forum as this will be locked.
