Title: PDF reader
Post by: 12AX7 on March 17, 2010, 08:37:15 AM
Using a different pdf reader than Adobe; and so far I like it.

Foxit (http://download.cnet.com/Foxit-PDF-Reader/3000-2079_4-10365812.html)

Seconded.  I've been deploying the free version of Foxit Reader for a couple of years now for end users and have had wonderful results.  It's ridiculously faster, uses about 1/3 of the memory, isn't obnoxious about constantly needing updating, and doesn't put the completely unnecessary "Adobe Reader Speed Launcher" (translation: "We make a bloated product and instead of making it more resource efficient, we secretly run it on Windows startup so that it LOOKS like it launches faster") into Windows' background startup routine.

For Windows users, I say ditch Adobe reader... uninstall it completely, and go with Foxit instead.

Especially since Adobe Reader has been known to have some damn nasty exploits.

Exactly.  Which is probably why their stupid updater is so obnoxious.

On a somewhat related note, if you insist on running Adobe Reader, do yourself a favour and do this:

1. Go to Start=>Run
2. Type "msconfig.exe" in the Run dialog and click OK
3. Go to the "Startup" tab and find the entry labeled "reader_sl" and uncheck it.
4. While you're in there, uncheck "qttask", "jusched" and anything that comes from Realplayer
5. Close MSCONFIG and reboot
6. When you've restarted, check the little checkbox in the lower left hand corner of the "System configuration utility" box that pops up.
7. Profit!

I do that and a few other things on pretty much every Windows workstation I touch in any of the LANs I support where I work.

I believe it was during the early C_R days of sporadic posts in the political forum with no intro thread that picked up all the smites.

In any case, thanks for the link, 12. Any better pdf creating software you know of? I've been using Acrobat and would absolutely love to get rid of it.

Foxit does pdf creator (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/creator/), too, but its not free. I would imagine it's not as expensive, and a better product, than Adobe. That's really all I know. I've never had to create a pdf; so I've never used a writer.

edit**  According to their site; the creator is only $29.99. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Quite the opposite, actually.

Also, around here, a smite is not always a negative.

I don't create really elaborate PDFs, so most of the time I just use the export to PDF functionality built into OpenOffice.org.
