I put number three in there because I got the impression that a lot of new people were signing up and posting, but were scared away when they did not post in the Newbie forum and were harassed about it. I know, call me crazy, maybe I'm delusional.

Maybe threads and replies by newbies that carry no real content value should just be deleted, and either they get banned, or a warning is sent via PM. That could cut down on some people getting potentially scared away.

Personally, I'm with Detta on the issue of flaming somone that really deserves it. However, the problem is what I call deserving may not be what Judge thinks is deserving.

I intended it to be a thread for people to describe the worst internet etiquette they have ever seen used by someone.

There will not be any talks about BJs here. Sorry, folks.

I understand there has been some questions and concerns about the rules that are posted here.

Post away if indeed you have any questions or concerns about them.

(HINT: Rule #3 seems to be the hot item for discussion nowadays)

Maybe I should create a thread to discuss/talk over the rules... I never thought of that, actually.

Here it is. The ULTIMATE forum rules discussion thread V# 1.0 - READ IT AND WEEP!

The files are still there. In fact, if you go to select an avatar right now, you will see a list of files that just have a series of numbers and letters. It's in that list, I promise. So if you don't have it readily saved, just go through it, and it should be there. (It isn't an overly large list, nor is it a list that I would go through for fun)

The reason why I did not try to run the script again is because of two reasons:

1. It is very intense on the server, and my host doesn't like it when I beat up their server (Though I've been thinking more and more about getting a dedicated)
2. I believe it will clear all of the current SMF tables and pull everything over from the old phpBB install, getting rid of everything that we have now.

I think it's just best to leave it as is right now. It's not a huge problem, though I wish there was an easy way to put everything back into place.

Anarchy / Worst Internet Etiquette. EVAR!

I used to have a computer teacher in high school for several years who insisted on typing in capital letters, and forced us to do the same. No matter what she was doing, it was in capital letters. File name? Capitals. Letter sent home to a parent because their child was caught looking at porn? Capital letters. Email to a bank? Capital letters. This woman loved capital letters. I honestly believed that she was a Capital Connoisseur, kind of like the John Nash of professional formatting, but without all of the delusions... well, I don't know that for sure, so I can't rule that out.

This lady was a nut case. She was an old typewriting instructor who now was faced with teaching computer courses. She was ill-prepared for the task, but she took it like a trooper each year - I'm pretty sure she kept a bottle of lube in her desk for times when she couldn't figure out how to restart the computer. She tried to teach kids the improper way to create web pages using Microsoft FrontPage, as well as how to create dumb programs written in VB that would display stupid pictures of her dog Jake. (She was in love with her dog Jake, as well as Capital letters. Maybe the dog's name was 'JAKE' and not 'jake') Needless to say, after about the first week of class (I had her for three classes during my high school career) the entire class hated the lady with a passion. Maybe it was because she always typed in caps, maybe it was because she was fat, and maybe it was because she could not comprehend how to properly save a Word document within a directory structure, or maybe it was because she was rumored to be a lesbian. PEOPLE DID NOT LIKE HER. PERIOD.

BJ, as I'll call her, and because that was her real first name, wins in my book for "Worst internet etiquette. EVAR" simply because it was painful watching her send countless emails and letters out to parents and administrators in all capital letters.

What examples do you guys have of poor internet/computer etiquette throughout the years you have been computing?

Yes, ipconfig /flsuhdns is what you need to try in order to clear your DNS cache on your computer.

Demo, I'll look into the issue for you, so you can begin smiting people ASAP. I believe it's a simple permission-based setting that I over looked.

Is anyone else experiencing this same problem?

I guess I must have missed that in the permissions. Oops.

And no, those confirmation emails go out automatically. I'm not sure as to why the confirmation did not go through.

If you continue to have problems ivan, just shoot me an email at chris[at]gotthegeek.com and I'll see what I can do for you.

I wonder if Chris can setup auto banination based on Karma scores. That would make my life easier.

You know what, that's a great idea... I'll look into that.

A girl at work goes to me, "Did you hear about that baby that was born at 6 o'clock this morning that weighed 6 pounds, 66 ounces?"

What. The. Fuck. 66 ounces? I'm guessing it was 666 millimeters tall, too.

We now have Karma. Karma ratings are displayed right under a user's avatar, as well as within their profile.

All you fuckers who post stupid shit better watch out.

The following restrictions currently apply:

You are required to have at least 100 posts before you are allowed to give other people good/bad Karma. It's only fair.
You can use the Karma feature once an hour. (Administrators/Moderators must wait one hour as well. Though I suppose I could just go into the database and make whatever changes I see fit.)

Enjoy!

FYI: I was listening to Culture Club's Karma Chameleon while typing this. Go figure!

Political Opinions / Re: Immigration
« on: June 06, 2006, 12:27:57 PM »
The stupidest rallying cry, the talking-point I hear over and over again, is "this wave of immigrants is different, because they do not want to assimilate." That has been said about every immigrant group in US history, from the Chinese in the mid-1800s to the Italians and Poles, to the Russians and the Cubans, to the Vietnamese boat people and the very very strange Hmong among us. And it always ends up being not true: assimilation inevitably happens. "Oh," the current immigrant alarmists cry, "but these Mexicans are different! They won't learn the language! They don't even try!" Absolute, 100% bullcrap. BULLCRAP! It was always this way. The older generation, set in its ways, stays Italian or Polish or Vietnamese deep in their hearts. But their children are today's Americans. And how can these alarmists say such things with a straight face? "They don't want to blend in!" How the hell are they supposed to blend in while living under the constant threat of deportation? Illegal immigrants, by definition, cannot assimilate. But their children do.

I can attest to this. The younger immigrants are more willing to learn the English language; they ask me question on how to say certain words and phrases in English, and some of them even take English classes on their own, which I think is great. On the other hand, there are those who are about 35 to 40 years old and older who want nothing to do with the English language, other than how to say, "Hello, goodbye, thank you, sorry" and a few other important words. I'm sure this is the same with any other influx to the United States - The younger generation adapts easily, whereas the elders don't want to change their ways.

Just my two cents.

Speaking of thunder3davis, what ever happened to him? His last post on HN was in 2003. I remember the whole "flame war" between him and Demo, but he has to be hanging out somewhere else now.

I did a quick Google search on his username, and came up with this profile that shows he was last active there in August of 2005. Maybe he shot himself with his own AK-47?

It kind of reminds me of a song out of the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp (Who was scary as fuck in that movie, by the way). Maybe the opening or closing song. I don't remember, I saw it a long time ago with my girlfriend.

I thought you did coding, Revka. I can relate to that as well. The only thing people pay with nowadays are 20s and credit cards, and when their credit card is declined, it must be my fault.

Maybe if they paid their bills, they wouldn't be declined for $2.12. Scumbags.
