Is there a simple way of telling the speed of a AMD processor manually - preferablly without removing the fan.

normally you can determine that with the serial number, but I'm not sure what you should be looking for exactly. If you can get the serial number, check out the amd website for more info. Or perhaps someone here knows.

If only it were so simple :)

Thats my problem. My P.C's been weird from the beginning in regards to the processor - when booted up a error message pops up everytime saying that theres a problem and to fix it in the bios. When the bios is changed it crashes and forces me to reset the CMOS thus bringing back the problem. I was sure I'd ordered the AMD 2100+ - I'm looking for reciepts and stuff at the mo to confirm this - but whichever way I aproach it via autmatic detection the processor is stated as being a 1500+ - I have visited the AMD site and have downloaded programs from there but they still say that its a 1500+ . I've been informed that a way to sort all of this out is to flash the bios but I'm loathe to do it unless required and so I'm back to finding out exactly what processor I have...

Flash it. You might as well. In the end, it'll probably be less trouble.

I just have a bad feeling I'm gonna screw it up. Looks like if you do you have to get a new bios chip and stuff...

well, you can't really rely on the receipt. What if you got screwed? What if you were told this was a 1800 porcessor but it isn't?

If you want to be 100% sure, you're gonna have to take the CPU out and check the serial number. Here's a sample athlon serial number:

A1200AMT3C
AVFA0036CPBW
RFBE . . .

Notice on the first line where you have "A1200". This indicates it's a 1200Mhz processor. Check out what yours says. Then you'll know for sure.

Beware, if you plan on removing the CPU and have no clue what you are doing, you may end up frying some components. Make sure you know how this stuff works. Only do it if you are comfortable to do it. Or get a qualified person to check it out for you.

Once you find out what the serial number is, you can take the first line and type that in google. A bunch of sites will come up and they will tell you exactly what your processor is (i.e., tunderbird, or other models, not just Mhz)

The good news?

Its a 2100 :D

The bad...

I've had to undo the who computer - had to take the motherboard outta the unit to get to the fan - which also means undo all cables and nearly every screw in the whole p.c :(

Ah well I guess I'll have to upgrade the bios...once I've put the damn thing back toagther again

Err I think I broke it  :?

One Led comes on but no matter how hard I press the power button nothing. I guess I could've missed a connection out somewhere but its lookig more and more likely I've messed up a bit of hardware.

Sounds more like you didn't connect the power switch to the right two pins on the motherboard.
