If you switch the speakers around, assuming you can do so, does the same speaker stay on? If so I'd say your speakers were shot. The most likely problem is a bad connection. Try unplugging everything and setting it back up.

Also, if you have pets, make sure the cord hasn't been chewed on, etc.

If your speakers work fine with another PC or if you were to plug them into your, say, portable CD player, then it could be settings on your PC. Make sure you have your channels set to the same levels.

Otherwise, I agree with FOO: Your speakers are probably shot.

For whatever reason, WinAmp used to do weird things with my default audio settings when I was using a Soundblaster card.  Any time I'd fire up WinAmp, it would reset my "balance" all the way over to one side, always the left, so no sound would come out of the right speaker.

And it would stay that way, even after I shut WinAmp off and opened some other app.  I'd have to manually reset it every time.

That little glitch was the main reason I didn't use WinAmp for quite a while.

Now I don't use it mainly because I spend more time in Linux than anything else.

But check out your equalizer settings in your audio properties and make sure you don't have some settings fiddled with.

it's not the speakers. I've tried multiple speakers as well as headphones and i only get sound out of one side(speaker)

it's not the levels either.

it's some sort of major malfunction

will re-installing windows help ?

Before you do a total flatten and re-install, just uninstall the sound drivers in safe mode then reboot. Windows should re-detect and re-install just the drives and that might work.  :) I know you said you re-installed the sound card, but doing it in safe mode it a total wipe clean of the drivers.

If possible try installing the sound card in another computer too. Although xolik's suggestion is definately one to try first.

How old is the sound card BTW? If it's 5+ years old it might have blown some component or other.

Boot into Safe mode (hold down F8 after the BIOS loads, but before the XP loading screen comes up. Might take some trial and error to do right.) Then hit windows key + break key, or open the System control panel. Go to Hardware > Device manager and you should see a Sound, video and game controllers heading. Open that, and you should see you sound card listed. Right click on it and select un-install.

After that, I'd suggest shutting down rather than just rebooting but a reboot should be all you need. If you really feel like going the extra mile. Open the computer take out the sound card, then boot up into windows, shutdown again and put the sound card back in. Then when you boot up it should detect the sound card for sure.
