Not all :) as teens use informal writing at school

Just click the link. This saddens me to think, they'll end up managing me one day.

As stupid as I think some of that stuff is, I also believe that the point of writing is communication.  It's a living language, which means it's going to change.  A teacher is a little different, it's up to them to make sure that they know that if they do that out in the world they're going to look like idiots, at least for the next decade or two.  Outside of that, I can't really get worked up about it.

Cherubim is plural; Genesis 3:24 specifies one flaming sword. Presumably flaming swords were in short supply."

Anyone else get the feeling that a lot of text messaging writing is like Newspeak from 1984?

BizB was just making that comparison the other day.

I don't see it that way.  This is more of just a linguistic cultural trend -- there are lots of those throughout history in almost every language.

In 1984 it was a conscious, strategic effort to affect thought by steering language in a very specific direction.

Oh. You mean political correctness.

Does calling a 10th grader a "minor infraction of the United States Education System" when they don't know the difference between formal and non-formal writing, count as PC?

EDIT: "American" removed so as not to offend the Canadians.  :-D

formal and non-formal writing
:?  Formal? I never get dressed up to write, lol! I'm usually in jeans and a t-shirt; very informal.

Heh. I graduated before they had formal writing. The closest thing to formal we got was "capitalizing" the red deer's antlers, and double-spacing between the stick man, the spear, and the bison.

 I thought putting antlers on the red deer was capitalizing. Oh dear. I better go back, do some studying, and buff back up on my Grumpy-Old-Manish. And here I am, having spent this whole time not capitalizing the red deer's antlers, talking about other kids.

Well, that decision's been made... I'm going back to school for music education, not English education. :(
