Must have programs
« on: November 17, 2004, 06:28:19 PM »

What are the programs that you install right away when you reinstall your OS? You know, the programs that you can't live without, or the ones that make life a whole lot easier.

My list:

Opera - Replacement for Internet Explorer
Remote Desktop Client (Windows 2000) - Windows 2000 doesn't have it built in
Eudora 6.1 - Email client
Trillian - Instant Messaging client
SmartFTP - FTP Client
Photoshop - Image editing
AdAware - Spyware detection
NeroBurn - CD burning software

I just reformatted and fixed someone's computer because it got pretty messed up, and I get a call today and the person said that there was an 'odd message' on her computer. Spyware strikes again. I failed to install the latest version of Ad Aware on her computer, so I have a feeling it's going to be coming back to me soon for more repairs.  :?

Also, do any of you guys carry around a thumb drive with must have applications, drivers, and updates with you? I think this could soon prove to be useful for me. I know Ad Aware is going on mine ASAP.

XP SP2 - A must have.
Norton AV - Again, a must have.
Nero 5.5 - Burn, baby, burn!
WinMX - pr0n access
Media Player Classic - Better than WMP.
Defiler Pack - Almost every codec know to humankind.
Winamp. - Can't believe I forgot this the first time!

Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D (latest version)
Norton AV
XP SP1+misc. other important updates
Firefox
Eudora (cuz I'm addicted to my email)
SmartFTP
Trillian
Winamp
Photoshop
Dreamweaver
Roxio 6
eMule
Alcohol 120%
OpenOffice
AudioCatalyst

But that's just my must-haves. Were I redoing someone else's computer, it'd be down to the first 5 items listed.

I've never had to reinstall an OS.  Plus I'm lazy, but considering that I would have to, it would be

Spybot
Adaware
Cute FTP
Quicken
X-chat
Office
Any necessary updates
Image software that came with my camera
Printer/scanner/copier/fax software

That's probably it, I'm pretty boring.

Norton Internet Security03 - I don't know if I like it.
Firefox - just got it a few days ago and I love it.
Photoshop
Corel Graphics9

Dreamweaver3
Flash4
Word
AIM
Unreal Tournament - just decided to commit to it after not playing any video games for 3 years. I know......  I'm strange.

Having just gone through this at work when I got my new laptop....

Microsoft Office 2000
Oracle
Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
AIM
SpyBot S&D
McAfee
HTML-kit

Then, it takes me about 2 days to get all the little fucking personal preferences to the point where I'm just annoyed at having a new computer rather than pissed at the world and unable to function.

Slackware already comes with most things that I typically need.

But usually I'll install:
  • Proftpd
  • Ximian Evolution
  • the latest version of OpenOffice
  • the latest version of OpenSSH
  • Opera
  • Firefox
  • the Citrix program neighborhood client for Linux
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • RealVNC client and server[/list:u] Just to cover all the bases.

Why do you use Opera and Firefox? Are they not both browsers?

I like Opera.  It's fast.  But it has some issues rendering some things.  I also like Firefox.  They've fixed a lot of bugs in a really short span of time, and I think it has potential.

I'm sorry. Bearing in mind that running, using, and installing are closely related, I was wondering why he was using running programs in tangent. But I forgot if Opera was an e-mail program or a browser.

Hmmm... what DID I install last month when I redid my system?

0. Drivers (seriously: I downloaded the most current drivers for my hardware and burned them to disk, along with...)
1. Firefox
2. McAffee VirusScan

Then I plugged in my ethernet cable and patched.  After that, I installed...
3. Kyrio Personal Firewall (not married to it, I'll also use Sygate.)
4. OpenOffice.org
5. Innovative Millennium (work-related program, includes Sun Java)
6. Nero
7. Ext2Anywhere (lets Windoze mount and use ext2 and ext3 partitions, such as my 160GB data drive.)
8. WinRAR
9. DaemonTools

I should probably investigate purchasing Alcohol 52%.  I didn't include any games because I go through phases.  I also still need to install Macromedia Studio MX, putty and whatever that DVD program is I use.  Ummm... PowerDVD.  Yeah.
